Ratan Thiyam to be honoured with D.Lit:

The Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, has conferred the Degree of Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) on renowned dramatist Ratan Thiyam of Manipur.
A message from the vice chancellor of the university, Prof Karunasindhu Das, has informed that the dramatist will be honoured with the degree at the university’s 33rd Annual Convocation slated to be held on May 7 at the Jorasanko Thakurbari in appreciation of Thiyam’s highly distinguished contribution in the area of drama.

Abdul Kalam's poetry books released:

Manipuri version of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam's poetry compilation "The Life Tree" translated by SP (CID) Dr Ibocha Soibam was released on Sunday at Imphal office of Writers' Forum by the Forum's president IS Kangjam.
Noted author BS Ramkumar elaborated on the Manipuri version of the book entitled "Punshi Pamel".
Meanwhile, a book entitled "Gandhigee Mityengdagee' penned by Moirangthem Surjit was released at a simple function held at the Manipur Press Club on Sunday.

CM inspects Kangla works:

Imphal: On his arrival from Delhi on Sunday afternoon, Chief Minister O Ibobi, accompanied by Works Minister K Ranjit and other officials, made an inspection tour of the development and beautification works going on in Kangla.
As it is believed that Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh may visit the state next month, bitumen laying work of the roads inside Kangla is being taken up on war-footing with the labourers working at night too.
The Chief Minister has also instructed the relevant officials accelerate development works around the Kangla helipad and depressed areas.
He also asked the officials to prepare a blueprint with estimated cost for development of the Kangla western gate in the upcoming meeting of the Kangla Fort Board scheduled for May 2.
Asking to make proper levelling of the ground around the temple being built over the sacred site of Pakhangba, the Chief Minister instructed the officials to remove the kitchen gardens being prepared by the families of IRB personnel near road sides inside Kangla.

Health Minister assures nursing council in the state:

Acknowledging technical difficulties and myriad inconveniences endured by nursing institutes located in the state, Health Minister Pheiroijam Parijat affirmed that the Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government is committed to setting up State's own Nursing Council at the earliest.
Speaking as the chief guest at the lamp lighting and oath taking ceremony of the Rabi School of Nursing, Ningthoukhong, Sangaiprou Branch's 11th batch at the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy on Sunday, the minister observed once the Nursing Council is established problems like getting affiliation and travel-related expenditure could be reduced to a large extent.
Noting that numerous nursing institutes under the Assam State Nursing Council had sprung up in the state, Parijat also expressed that once Manipur has its own Council not only would affiliation inconveniences could be addressed suitably but quality institutes and not quantity could also be ensured.
Maintaining that relevant process for establishment of State's Nursing Council had already been initiated, he exuded confidence that once established nursing ethics could be imbibed to the nurse aspirants, instructors and the institutes itself.

Guite Families demand explanation on killing:

Imphal: Demanding an explicit explanation for killing Thangkhalal Guite and Paominthang Guite by unidentified persons near Keibi Kumuda Mamang Thandabi canal in the night of April 18, the family members have decided not to claim the corpses.
Speaking to reporters at Canan Veng, North AOC on Sunday afternoon, Thangkhalal Guite's mother Ashi Guite claimed that her son was an innocent civilian.
Since the expiry of his father, Thangkhalal was earning daily wages to supplement family income, she conveyed.
At about 8 am of April 18, one Sagolsem Sunil of Nongshum village came to their house and went out with Thangkhalal.
Even as Ashi waited for return of her son the whole night forgoing her meal, Thangkhalal never came back.
In the next morning, Sunil came and asked if Thangkhalal had returned.

AMESCO hosts Sajibu Khudol at Mao:

Imphal: Under its annual programme of Sajibu Khudol Tamba Eegi Khongul Liba, aimed at reinforcing the age-old fraternal ties among the different ethnic groups of Manipur, the All Manipur Ethnical Socio-Cultural Organisation (AMESCO) presented simple gifts to the elders of Mao ethnic group on Sunday.
At a simple but solemn function held at Kalinamei UJB School under Mao sub-division of Senapati district, women volunteers of AMESCO presented the gifts.
The function attended by villagers of Kalinamei and Phikomai was graced by Kalinamei village chairman M Kholi, village secretary B Nelli, AMESCO vice-president IB Luwang and AMESCO general secretary S Nando as presidium members.
Giving key-note address of the function, S Nando observed that the tradition of presenting simple gifts like clothes weaved by their own hands by married women to their brothers and parents has been in practice since the 36 indigenous ethnic groups of Manipur got their different names.
Of the six programmes organised by the AMESCO in a year, Sajibu Khudol Tamba is one among them.
The other programmes are Christmas, Gaan Ngai, Idul Zuha, Mera Hou Chongba and Ningol Chakkouba.
