Shija's unique operation restores man's eyesight

Imphal, June 20 : Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI) has accomplished yet another medical milestone with the restoration of a man's eyesight through the use of amniotic membrane transplant. According to Dr Sachindra Laishram of SHRI's Eye Care Foundation, one PL Benjamin (47) of Senapati Bazar was on June 5 evening brought to the private medical centre with burns on the right forearm and both eyes which the individual suffered from lime bubble bursts while he was preparing to white-wash his house. After examination of the patient's condition by a team comprising himself and one Dr Noornika Khuraijam the latter on further studies strongly suggested application of the amniotic membrane transplant method in the restoration operation of Benjamin's damaged cornea, recounted Dr Sachindra who explained amniotic membrane as thin innermost membranous sac enclosing the developing embryo of higher vertebrates such as reptiles, birds and mammals. Rotarians extend help for Nargis victims : Imphal, May 22: In solidarity with the suffering of the people of Myanmar in the wake of cyclone Nargis devastating the low lying area of Irrawaddy Delta relief materials were handed over to Myanmarese authorities on behalf of 77 Rotary clubs from Rotary International District 3240 . The relief materials hand-over was initiated under the leadership of DG, Rtn Parbhat Kedia to convey solidarity with people of Myanmar in this hour of sorrow and bereavement. The items including emergency medicines were delivered at Burma Border Trade Centre (Tamu), the official point of aid centre as volunteers are not permitted to reach the affect zone physically, said a release of Rotary Club. Shop owner shot by suspected UGs: A 27-old shop owner was hospitalised after he was shot at by two unidentified gunmen suspected to be UGs on Saturday evening at Kakwa bazar under Singjamei police station at Imphal. The injured man, identified as Konthoujam Pilot of Singjamei Thongam Leikai was reportedly shot with a single bullet at his left thigh by two unidentified gunmen inside his shop at Kakwa bazar at around 7.15 pm on Saturday without any reason. The victim was adimtted to Shija hospital, and Singjamei police registered a case in this connection. Engineer shot at by gunmen: Imphal, Dec 21: An executive engineer of the state IFCD Soubam Dhanabir, 52, was shot at both legs by unidentified gunmen at his house at Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai on Friday morning at around 7.30 am. The victim was evacuated to Shija Hospital where he is reported to be out of danger. According to Dhanabir, an unidentified youth walked into his living room without a word and shot him twice in both thighs. The youth fled the spot immediately afterwards along with another youth who was waiting at his gate on a motorcycle. Dhanabir was operated on at Shija Hospital and both bullets removed. Hospital sources said he was out of danger. Police sources believe the shooting to be the handiwork of the KCP (MC) group.
