Polluted Nambul river devastates fish and humans: Manipur's Nambul river's role in the context of maintaining the climatic conditions of Manipur cannot be ignored as it directly falls into the Loktak lake - the largest fresh water lake in North East India, which plays a vital role in controlling the ecological balance of the region. But urbanization and taking up of various developmental projects in other parts of the state have started showing its fangs - the most palpable being the pollution of the Nambul River running through the city. The river becomes polluted once it starts entering Imphal's main market area. The most polluted part of the river in its 10 kilometre stretch in Imphal city begins from Hump Bridge until it reaches Keishamthong bridge - a distance of almost 1.5 km. Security forces strike it rich: Imphal, Feb 5: Security forces have arrested five activists, including three PREPAK cadres and two PULF men in the last 48 hours. According to a statement of the SP (IW) Clay Khongsai a commando team acted swiftly upon receiving information of unknown miscreants attacking the Keishamthong Moirangningthou Leirak residence of Executive Engineer of Education (S) Department's Engineering Cell Yumnam Deben Singh at around 8.20 pm on Monday. While the commandos arrested one Koijam Warjit Singh (s/o) (L) K Yaima of Thongju Part-I Pheija Leitong from the incident site, three others managed to evade arrest. One Day and Three Bridges

Three bridges see light of the day: Imphal, Dec 24: After long years of waiting, three bridges constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD) -- Keishamthong bridge, Singjamei bridge and Heirangoithong bridge were finally inaugurated and dedicated to the people on Monday. However, Joint Action Committee on Singjamei Bridge Construction has taken strong exception to the inauguration of the bridge even before construction of the retaining wall and black-topping of the approach roads and contended that it is in violation of the agreement signed with the Chief Engineer of PWD. Works Minister K Ranjit inaugurated the bridges one after another. Constructed over Imphal river, the Singjamei bridge was inaugurated at 9 am and Heirangoithong bridge and Keishamthong bridge that have been constructed over Nambul river were inaugurated at 10 am and 10.50 am respectively.
