Price of Insurgency?

Manipur tops in number of casualties : Shillong: Manipur tops the list of insurgent related incidents and casualties in the past one year. The Union Home Ministry status paper on internal security situation spelt out 414 militancy related incidents in the Northeastern region, where 131 civilians lost their lives in the process, 171 extremist killed . In the past one year, there were 153 militancy related incidents in Manipur alone. 57 civilians lost their lives in Manipur and 64 extremists were gunned down, revealed the status paper. Altogether there were 153 incidents reported in which the security forces lost 39 men. In Nagaland, the number of insurgency incidents was reported as 67, in which 15 civilians and 10 extremist getting killed in the process. The paper reveals that during the same period, there is 152 incidents in Assam, out of which 55 civilians lost their lives and 35 extremists were killed. North East Games

Manipur’s gold rush continues: Guwahati, Jan 31: Judokas and weightlifters continue to provide maximum number of gold medals to Manipur's kitty as the 22nd North East Games completed the second day on Thursday. As per official report Manipur is leading the medals' race on 24 gold, 15 silver and 17 bronze medals with Assam level on the silver and bronze medal count but five less in terms of gold medal. Tripura is in third place with a total of 10 gold, 15 silver and 16 bronze medals. The State judo team wrested seven gold and one silver medal today taking the total to nine gold, and two silver and bronze each. L Sushila (44kg/W), L Sandhyarani (48kg/W), N Santimala (52kg/W), H Ichal (56kg/W), T Rajesh (56kg/M), NK Romen (60kg/M) and T Paksana (75kg/M) won their respective final bouts as Ajit secured the men's 66kg silver medal. Tripura Girl’s Bold Initiative

Opting for cinema to fight militancy: Agartala: There has been different ways of condemning militancy, which has turned out as a biggest menace in recent years, but the efforts of a young girl from Tripura have been a unique one. Raikishori Ganguli has opted to use the medium of cinema to fight against the 'evil force' of militancy, which has taken thousands of lives in the State in the last two and a half decades. Ganguli, who recently completed a film study course from Jadavpur University in Kolkata, has directed a short Bengali film titled "Bhalo Rakhoni Bhoy" to make people aware of the threats from militancy. The 12-minute film has been selected in the Short Film Category at Kolkata, and it deals with the psychological condition of a salesman and his frightful daily experiences with events that happen around the world. The Year Gone By in Tripura

Development initiatives make 2007 eventful: Agartala: Tripura witnessed a remarkable achievement in containing a two-decade-old militancy and several resource mobilisation initiatives in 2007, while political activism and corruption in the state administration made the year gone by eventful. Tripura signed as many as six bilateral trade treaties with Japan, Germany, China and Thailand-based enterprises for utilising forest and agricultural resources for sustainable economic development of the state. As part of the mission, Tripura hosted two international seminars on development of infrastructure and agricultural productivity with world renowned experts. Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards

Two Manipuris among 33 winners: New Delhi, Dec 20: Renowned playwright Yumnam Rajendro who was associated with Panthoibi Natya Mandir, Imphal, Gouranga Leela and Th. Brindasabi Devi from Manipur were among the 33 eminent persons selected for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for the year 2007. There was no awardee for Manipuri classical dance this year. The Akademi Ratna is restricted to 30 living personalities at any given point of time. Lalthangfala Sailo and Yumnam Rajendra Singh got the award for playwriting. All India Police Hockey

Manipur Police beaten: Jalandhar, Dec 11: Manipur lost to Karnataka 1-6 (half time score 1-3) in the 56th All-India Police Hockey Championship at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here on Tuesday. Roshan Madappa struck thrice for Karnataka in the 3rd, 23rd and 27rd minutes, while NP Laxman Rao (43rd, 57th) and G Magesh (56th) scored the remaining goals. Turan scored the lone goal for the Manipur side in the 34th minute. Manipur were unable to convert none of their seven penalty corners. In another match, SSB beat Tripura 5-2 (half time 3-1). Syed Yasir Shamim scored three goals by converting penalty corners in the 11th, 30th and 54th minute. L. Joychandra Singh and Sanjit Singh added one each in the 17th and 59th minutes respectively for SSB.
