Alcohol Atlas of India

NE people consume more alcohol, tobacco: New Delhi: After entering the record books for highest consumption of tobacco in the country, the North-East has had people addicted to high consumption of liquor, now. According to the "Alcohol Atlas of India," consumption of alcohol in northeastern states is higher than many other parts of the country. Interestingly, women in the region drink more than their male counterparts. The "Alcohol Atlas of India," prepared by Indian Alcohol Policy Alliance (IAPA), was recently released by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Anbumani Ramadoss. The overall patterns of alcohol consumption vary throughout the country, the Atlas said. Besides the North-East including Sikkim, women also tend to drink more in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. RIMS works entrusted to Central panel: Imphal, Apr 23: With financial management of the State Government far from being satisfactory and taking into account unstable law and order situation development works of RIMS is informed to have been entrusted to the Central Government's public undertaking Hospital Services Consultant. A top official of the medical institute stated that incompetency of the State Government in the utilisation of the annual plan allocation coupled with the prevailing law and order uncertainty has led to the Central Government to adopt a more pragmatic approach so as to ensure development funds do not fall into wrong hands. Ban on Tobacco Consumption

Khaini, Zarda burnt: Imphal, Dec 20: A considerable quantity of tobacco products including Talab, Khaini, Zarda and mitha mana seized by cadres of RPF Division IV were consigned to flames at about 6.25 pm on Thursday after the seized products were handed over to volunteers of the Khoyathong Polem Leikai local club. Five shops have also banned for three to six months for reportedly selling tobacco products. The shops belong to Chitra Devi (42) w/o Leishangthem Lokendro of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai, Haikham Sanju (22) s/o Dhiren of Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai, Khwairakpam Kula s/o Anand of Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai, Hemabati Devi w/o Achoibam Naocha of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai and Kshetrimayum Deventi Devi w/o Basan of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai. Some tobacco items were also seized from the shops of Chanambam Bimola of Leirenhanjaba Leikai, Laishram Ibeyaima of Sinam Leikai, Ngangbam Sarat of Lourungpurel Leikai and Laishram Inao of Lourungpurel Leikai. Khundrakpam takes initiative: Imphal, Dec 13: A public meeting held at Haraorou Community Hall on Thursday resolved to impose ban on selling and consumption of tobacco products like Zarda, Khaini, Talab, etc. in any part of Khundrakpam Assembly constituency with immediate effect. The meeting attended by representatives of Meira Paibis, clubs, other social organisations and transporters’ societies of Haraorou, Pangei, Waiton, Nepali Basti Khundrakpam, Tangkham, Taorem, Khuningthek, Sarouthel, Ngairangbam, Morok Ingkhol, Yumnam Khunou, Sambei, Chigkhu, Sinam Kom, Sinam, Ishikha further resolved that all those who defy the ban should themselves be held responsible for any eventuality. After the end of the meeting, a large quantity of tobacco products surrendered by the traders and shop keepers themselves was set on fire.
