1981 Medical Purchase Scam

Three more doctors, one supplier nailed: Imphal, Jan 31: Three more doctors and one supplier have been nailed by the Court in two special trial cases in connection with the 1981 medical scam under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act. Case dossiers said that the convicted persons swindled over Rs 20 lakh while purchasing medical equipments by quoting exorbitant rates. The doctors convicted are identified as Dr G Mani Sharma, currently serving as Superintendent of the State's Tuberculosis Hospital, Dr T Vijoychandra Singh, Dr Pukhrambam Brajamani Singh and supplier Ashok Kumar Jain. The three doctors were convicted in two cases-Special Trial No I and Special III, while the Court convicted Ashok Kumar Jain in Special Trial No III, said Advocate P Ibomcha Singh, Special Public Prosecutor while appearing on behalf of the Government. Long Arm of Law Catches Up

Medical scam accused convicted: Imphal, Jan 2: In a landmark judgment, the Special Court (No 1, Manipur West), has found two doctors guilty of swindling government money while purchasing medical equipment. The case stretches back to 1981 and involves the present Medical Superintendent of State's Tuberculosis Hospital Gurumayum Mani Sharma and Chief Medical Officer, Imphal Ayekpam Gojendra Singh. The verdict on the case was pronounced by the Special Judge (No 1, Manipur West) Th Surbala Devi on December 29 last, who held the duo guilty under various sections of the IPC related to abetment of conspiracy, cheating, forgery and prevention of corruption. As per case dossiers, the then Medical officer Mani Sharma in collusion with A Gojendra who then held the post of MO in-charge of Sterilization and Stores in the Family Welfare Department procured 40 electrical cauteries, equipment for healing skin etc at exorbitant rate of about Rs 2 lakh using forged bills. CM’s Pledge on Pourabi

Hands over Rs one lakh ex-gratia: Imphal, Dec 24: Terming the Pourabi bomb blast of December 16 last which claimed the lives of eight persons and wounded around 30 others as a cowardly act of terrorism, chief minister O Ibobi Singh on Monday pledged that the government would spare no efforts to find and punish those behind the blast. The chief minister, who returned to Imphal from New Delhi on Monday afternoon, met representatives of the families of the deceased at his official bungalow shortly after his arrival in the state capital and handed over ex-gratia amounting to Rs. 1 lakh each. However, the next of kin of two of the victims, L Devika daughter of Gulap of Keibi and P Ibethoi, daughter of Bungjao of Sekta Mayai Leikai, were not present apparently as they could not be informed in time. Junior National Taekwondo Championship

Manipur wins five medals: Imphal, Dec 10: With a total haul of 3 gold and 2 silver medals, the state men’s team won the 27th National Junior Taekwondo Championship 2007 as their female counterparts also emulated the feat at Margao (Goa) with 1 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals. The gold medal winners of the state are S Johny (featherweight), T Premjit (lightweight), A Naobi (light heavy) and S Surbala (lightweight). Silver medal winners: Y Amarjit (flyweight), W Johnson (middleweight), Ch Nganthoi (featherweight), Ph Sonia (flyweight), L Sarju (featherweight) and N Ronibala (heavy weight).
