Hero's welcome accorded to Suranjoy

Imphal, June 19 : Asian Boxing Championship gold medallist Mayengbam Suranjoy Singh was accorded a warm welcome by the people of Manipur on his arrival at Imphal today. Suranjoy, who clinched the flyweight category (51 kg) gold medal at the Asian championship held at China's Zhuhai from June 7 till 13, arrived at Tulihal Airport at around 9.15 am from where he was accompanied by a large number of enthusiastic supporters to SAI SAG Centre, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex. At the felicitation programme hosted by SAI NERC, Imphal and attended by many SAI officials and sportspersons, Mayang Imphal Assembly Constituency MLA Dr Kh Ratankumar, who is also the chairman of MANIDCO, formally handed over a cash reward of Rs 50,000 in recognition of the 22 year old's accomplishment at the international arena. CAG Reveals National Games Fund Diversion

Govt accounts for diverted police funds still not settled: Imphal, Apr 21: Documents relating to the release of Rs. 2 crores for the modernization of the police force in Manipur, which was diverted for security related expenditure during the Vth National Games held in Imphal during the year 1998-99, is yet to be furnished to the Union ministry of home affairs even after 10 years have passed, a source has said. Despite reminders from the Union ministry of home affairs for furnishing the same with the latest intimation asking for furnishing of the same before the closing of this year 2007-08, the same is pending with the Manipur government, the source further said. The report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India for the year ending 31st March 2003, financial accounts 2002-03 as well as appropriation accounts 2002-03 for the state of Manipur had revealed the diversion of the funds by the Manipur government. Saratchandra Football: NEROCA Sangakpham and the MPSC have completed the semi finals line-up of the 4th L Saratchandra Memorial Invitation Football Tournament being played at Kongkhampat ground, Nambol. In the last match of group B, MBSU Wahengbam Leikai pipped TRAU Kwakeithel 5-3 . The second match between MPSC and NEROCA ended in 1-1 draw. Th Rohen of MPSC equalised NEROCA's first half goal by H Amarjit to earn the police side a crucial point. At the end of the match, NEROCA emerged winners of group C on better goal difference while the MPSC managed to get through to the semi-finals round by virtue of being the second best team of all the groups. KLASA, TRUGPU in Loktak trophy final: Moirang, Feb 5: KLASA and TRUGPU entered the final of the ongoing 1st Loktak trophy 2008 organised by AMOFA Moirang at Moirang Multipurpose ground here on Tuesday. In the semifinal matches on Tuesday, KLASA laboured to a hard-fought 6-5 win against MBSU, Wahengbam via tie-breakers after normal time ended with both sides scoring two goals each while TRUGPU recorded a comfortable 3-1 win over KRYPSA, Naoremthong. Naoton opened the TRUGPU score with a goal in the sixth minute followed by Boynao extending the lead in the 28th. Assam Regimental Centre lift title: Imphal, Feb 4: Assam Regimental Centre (ARC), Shillong rallied from a goal down to outlast Manipur Police sports Club (MPSC) 5-2 in the final match of the 10th Dr Kanti Mukherjee Memorial Invitation Hockey Tournament at the Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium on Monday. After conceding a goal only six minutes into the game when MPSC's N Gunamani converted a penalty corner, ARC came back strongly with four goals before the local side pulled back one on Gunamani's second in the 51st minute. However, the commanding lead was restored when Thanga struck his second of the match in the 64th minute, his first coming in the 21st.The other ARc scorers are Y Holendro (12th) and M Arunkumar (19th, 49th). Pipe laying to be over by mid-Jan: CM Imphal, Dec 31: The ongoing pipe-laying work on major roads of Imphal city, being taken up as part of the Imphal sewerage project, will be completed by the middle of next month, chief minister O Ibobi Singh said on Monday. The CM made the statement while taking a tour around the Imphal municipal areas on Monday morning to inspect work being undertaken at various places as part of the sewerage project. The chief minister also stated that restrictions on construction of private buildings higher than three stories within the Imphal municipal area will be strictly prohibited, and has warned owners of buildings violating this norm to tear down the excess stories at the earliest. Manipur Police ahead Imphal, Dec. 18: Manipur Police Sports Club beat Naharol Yaipha Thourang Club 3-0 while Kangchup Road Youth Physical and Sports Association held Eastern Sporting Union to a 2-2 draw in the 7th Women’s Winners Cup for the BM Singh trophy here on Tuesday. In the opening match at Khuman Lampak main stadium on Tuesday, the policewomen had an easy game, with little resistance from the Naharol girls. Th. Tababi Devi gave a right flank pass to O. Bembem Devi, who converted it into a goal in the 31st minute, enabling the Police team to take the lead in the first half. In the second half, Th. Third time lucky NISA lift maiden CC Meet Trophy Imphal, Dec 9: It proved third time lucky for North Imphal Sporting Association (NISA) as they downed a spirited All Moirang Football Association (AMOFA) 2-0 in the final of the 51st CC Meet at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium on Sunday to lift the coveted CC Meet 2007 trophy. The team from Thangmeiband had earlier reached the final of the CC Meet tournament in 1969 and then again in 1994. NISA were however beaten to the coveted trophy in the earlier final appearances. For the Moirang side, this was their first entry to the final of the tournament. Though the match did not really rise to any great heights, thanks in no small part to the extremely uneven playing ground, that did not deter the record turn out, estimated to be about 15,000 plus. Amid the cheers and of course jeers from fans and supporters of the two sides, the match kicked off a 1.15 pm.
