NEC mulls on development projects: Imphal: Manipur government representatives who attended the 56th North Eastern Council meeting which concluded on Tuesday at Agartala drew the attention of the council and the Central government to the need for looking into the Look East Policy of the country. They urged all concerned to give a major thrust to the development of the Imphal airport, National Highways-39, 53, 150, Trans Asian Highway, border trading point at Moreh and Jiribam to Tupul railway line, an official source said. In the meeting, Manipur urged for upgradation of the Imphal airport into an international airport with cold storage facilities stating that the airport would soon have night landing facilities. They also urged for improvement of the three national highways which run across the state into four-lane roads for easy flow of heavy vehicular traffic. DoNER fund allocation slashed: New Delhi, May 2: Several development projects in the North-East are likely to be hit following massive reduction in allocation of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) funds. The Ministry made a projection of Rs 2,922 crore for the current fiscal, however, actual allocation was pegged at Rs 1455 crore, leaving it high and dry. Subsequently, the Ministry intimated a Parliamentary Standing Committee that due to reduction in the allocation by almost 50 per cent projects would suffer. The Ministry would not be able to implement the scheme for development of the region. The reduction in allocation is the latest set back to hit the Ministry. Proposed Abolition of DONER

NE CMs to oppose move: Shillong, Apr 21: The meeting of North Eastern Council (NEC) scheduled in Agartala on May 12 will be a forum for the eight Chief Ministers of the North Eastern States to oppose the proposed abolition of DONER Ministry. This disclosure was made by Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr.Donkupar Roy during his interaction with media persons in Shillong on Monday. Dr.Donkupar Roy, who earlier told the Meghalaya Assembly that the state is against the proposed abolition of the DONER ministry said, "Meghalaya is opposed to the proposed idea of wrapping up of the ministry created for the benefits of the North Eastern region". Aiyar's NEC Plenary Address

Revamp DoNER, NEC: Aiyar New Delhi, Dec 18: With the Centre drawing up plans to pump in more funds into the North Eastern Region, Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Minister Mani Shanker Aiyar has underlined the urgent need for a major revamp of his Ministry and the North Eastern Council (NEC). While the initiative to energise the DoNER has gained momentum, the Minister said his Ministry is now ready to play the role of ambassador of the North Eastern States (NES) in Delhi. Aiyar has been reviewing the various initiatives taken during the year at the third plenary meeting of the NEC that concluded here on Tuesday.
