Abolition of DoNER Ministry

NESO opposes move: Shillong, May 4: The North East Students Organisation has opposed the recommendation of the Administrative Reforms Commission to abolish the DoNER ministry. Neso member and Khasi Students Union (KSU) general secretary Hamlet Dohling said it was illogical to abolish the ministry instead of strengthening it. “It was because of Neso’s initiative that the DoNER ministry was set up a few years back with the aim of accelerating development in the Northeast,” Dohling said. According to the reforms commission, headed by former Karnataka chief minister Veerappa Moily, DoNER should be done away with and the Union home ministry could take up the task associated with the ministry. The responsibility of developing the Northeast could be entrusted to the Union home ministry, the reforms panel said. Proposed Abolition of DONER

NE CMs to oppose move: Shillong, Apr 21: The meeting of North Eastern Council (NEC) scheduled in Agartala on May 12 will be a forum for the eight Chief Ministers of the North Eastern States to oppose the proposed abolition of DONER Ministry. This disclosure was made by Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr.Donkupar Roy during his interaction with media persons in Shillong on Monday. Dr.Donkupar Roy, who earlier told the Meghalaya Assembly that the state is against the proposed abolition of the DONER ministry said, "Meghalaya is opposed to the proposed idea of wrapping up of the ministry created for the benefits of the North Eastern region". Planning Commission projection

5.9 pc growth rate expected: Imphal, Dec 6: The Planning Commission of India is expecting 5.9 PC growth rate during the 11th Five Year Plan period. However, out of the 50 Departments from which plan proposals were invited to fix the state's plan size for 2008-09, only 17 submitted plan proposals so far. Against the overall growth rate of 5.9 percent during the 11th Five Year Plan period, the Planning Commission is expecting growth rate of 1.2 percent in primary sector, 8 percent in secondary sector and 7 percent in service sector. Meanwhile, a reliable source informed that following intimation from the Planning Commission to submit a list of 21 projects which should be taken up on priority basis, the State Government has submitted a list which prioritised road communication, power, Loktak development and improvisation of education in hill districts.
