Heirok to study JK guidelines for SPOs: Imphal, May 18: Sticking to its earlier proposition that it would oppose utilisation/engagement of SPO personnel in counter insurgency operations, the JAC formed in the aftermath of the Heirok firing incident has asserted it would closely study contents of SPO guidelines prior to accepting actual setting up of SPOs in Heirok. Despite the renewed assertion of the JAC, the Government had set into motion recruitment exercises for enrolling 300 SPOs in Heirok village of Thoubal district. Plans are also afoot to recruit 200 SPOs for deployment/stationing at Lilong Chajing. It may be recalled that people of Heirok and Lilong Chajing had demanded weapons from the Government to protect themselves from unwanted elements following incidents of gun firing some months back that claimed the lives of four persons apart from injuring a teenage girl. Contempt of Court

HC issues warrants to three senior Govt. officials: Imphal, Feb 5: Acting on a contempt petition, the Gauhati High Court has issued bailable warrants of arrest to three senior Government officials Principal Secretaries DS Poonia and DV Singh and Chief Engineer (Power) M Sanatomba Singh. The court headed by Justices T Nandakumar Singh and PK Musahary on Tuesday issued the warrants for personal bond of Rs 5000 to the trio for their personal appearance before the same court on February 19 . A copy of the order has also been send to the State Director General of Police (DGP) for execution of the warrant. Despite receiving he earlier contempt notices by the respondents, none appeared for them without showing any cause, the court ruled. This contempt case followed after the respondents failed to comply with an earlier Court's ruling passed on April 18, 2006 . Commando unit to be raised: DGP Imphal, Jan 2: Manipur Director General of Police Yumnam Joykumar has affirmed that the Manipur police is raising a women police commando unit to help it in effectively dealing with frequent public agitations involving women. The DGP, who spoke exclusively to IFP at his office on Wednesday, also affirmed that all-women police stations are being set up, and disclosed that altogether 333 women police of various ranks would be recruited during the month of February. The DGP pointed out that most public agitations in the state involve women, or are spearheaded by women, and bringing such agitations under control is not an easy task, particularly when the police force is predominantly male. To deal effectively with such agitations, the large-scale recruitment of women police is being taken up as one of the components of the action plan for reduction of violence in Manipur drawn up by the home department, the DGP informed.
