New Year 2008

Dr Sidhu greets people: Imphal, Dec 31: On the occasion of New Year's Day 2008, Governor Dr SS Sidhu has conveyed best wishes to the people of Manipur. In his message, the Governor said that New Year's Day is not only an occasion for introspection but also for searching and evolving new resolutions for the coming year. Dr Sidhu also wished every one a new year full of peace, happiness, contentment, progress and prosperity. Greeting the people on the occasion of New Year's Day, Chief Minister O Ibobi called upon all to make a firm resolution to fight and defeat the evil designs of divisive and disruptive forces. Congress Foundation Day Celebrations

CM, Gaikhangam turn up, no Debendro: Imphal, Dec 28: The 122nd Foundation Day of the Indian National Congress was observed on Friday by the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, in the absence of several MLAs including some senior ministers, a reflection of the unresolved crisis in the Congress over the demand for replacement of Okram Ibobi Singh as chief minister. However, Okram Ibobi, and MPCC chief Gaikhangam, whom many observers see as the mastermind behind the rebellion in the Congress, were both present, sitting next to each other in all appearance of bonhomie. The pair shook hands before the gathering and were seen chatting amicably. Christmas in Manipur

Peace, festivity mark birth of Lord Jesus: Imphal, Dec 25: Christmas is being celebrated in Manipur on Tuesday with festive gaiety. The houses were decorated with colourful stars and singing of Christmas carols can be heard in every streets. Special Christmas games, sports, cultural programmes were organised in every parts of the state. Governor Dr S S Sidhu in a message said, ''Lord Jesus -- the son of God, was born to build a new world based on peace, justice and equality of mankind. Messages of love and peace pour in: Imphal, Dec 24: Messages of peace, love and amity have poured in from different quarters on Christmas eve. Greeting the people of Manipur, particularly the Christians, Governor Dr SS Sidhu in a statement said that Lord Jesus was born to build a new world order based on peace, justice and equality of mankind. “In celebrating His birth, we, besides paying our obeisance to this outstanding apostle of peace, have to rededicate ourselves to the ideals, principles and eternal values espoused by Him,” said the Governor. Chauhan leaves Imphal, no comments on regime change: Imphal, Dec 13: Union Minister of State and AICC general secretary north east in-charge Prithivi Raj Chauhan left Imphal on Thursday after concluding his three-day visit to the state, making no comments on the question of regime change which rebel Congress MLAs are demanding. Even though he refused to comment on the crisis, replying to questions raised by journalists at the concluding part of the inspection, Chauhan said, "I am satisfied with the works progress". However, he refused to comment on the main purpose of his visit to the state, the question of replacement of Ibobi as chief minister of Manipur. Officially Chauhan came to Imphal to inspect the status of the implementation of works taken up in the state with Central funds under the Prime Minister`s package. Points heard, Chauhan readies for Delhi: Imphal, Dec 12: For the second day on Wednesday, AICC general secretary and Northeast in-charge Prithiviraj Chauhan who is currently here as a Central Observer of the party to get first hand account of the crisis within CLP continued to meet CLP members, office bearers of the party and other frontal organisations to hear their opinion on the issue. Later in the evening, Chauhan called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan to discuss the political development in the state. The Central Observer would be leaving Imphal for Delhi on Thursday to submit the report of his visit to the state with the High Command of the AICC. MPCC chief plays down Cong rift: Imphal, Dec 9: Likening it to an internal affair of a family, MPCC president Gaikhangam has expressed confidence that the leadership crisis within Congress Legislature Party (CLP) would be settled and resolved very soon, even as MLAs in the dissident camp claimed that some of the Ministers who are loyal to Chief Minister are likely to join the oust Ibobi campaign soon. Talking to some mediapersons at Congress Bhavan here on Sunday before going to distribute blankets and sweetmeats to children in hospitals and children homes in connection with the birthday of AICC president Sonia Gandhi, Gaikhangam asserted that the so-called crisis in CLP is like a family matter which should not be taken very seriously.
