Monika wins medals in Asian Weightlifting: New Delhi, Apr 29: Laishram Monika Devi fetched the first medals for India in the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Kanazawa, Japan on Tuesday by finishing overall third in women's 69 kg category. Monika lifted a total weight of 222 kg (100 in snatch and 122 in clean and jerk) to finish behind Liu Chunhong of China (262: 117+145) and Kao Ya-chun of Chinese Taipei (222: 98+124) respectively. The Manipuri girl added a silver and bronze as she was second in snatch and third in clean and jerk. Water scarcity hits embattled sub-division: Imphal, Apr 27: Coupled with the global climatic change, large scale deforestation activities have resulted in acute shortage of water in Tipaimukh sub-division of Churachandpur district. Though the hills slopes of Tipaimukh were covered with thick forest cover not long ago, this precious trees were cut down and burnt to clear land for extensive cultivation of ginger. Driven by their desire to earn quick money and having very limited source of income, the villagers unwittingly took up ginger cultivation on a large scale by clearing forest trees. Such reckless deforestation activity, if not check properly by devising a more environment friendly method of ginger cultivation or providing some other means of livelihood to the villagers, will ultimately lead to a more disastrous situation in not very distant future. Women killed in New Samtal blast: In a tragic incident, three women were killed when a bomb exploded while they were working under the NREGS programme at New Samtal area in Chandel district at about 12 noon on Monday. The incident took place while the women were clearing the road. The three victims have been identified as Lhingkhonem (45), Hoikim Guite (45) and Paumeng Haokip (43). Many others were injured in the bomb blast. Sajik villagers reel under threat: Imphal, Jan 2: The villagers of Khullen Khailet at Sajik Tampak are today living under a cloud of fear and apprehension after an ethnic based underground outfit served demand notice on its chief and barred them from acquiring the job card under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme as well as from opening bank accounts. Moreover members of another community have allegedly asked them to leave their homesteads. A team of reporters which went to the said village to interact with the villagers on Thursday were informed that an underground outfit has not only debarred them from opening bank accounts but have also banned job cards under the NREGS to be issued to them. A demand notice was also served on the village chief. The villagers said that members of another community have threatened them to vacate the village or else fire dire consequences. Central Observer lauds achievement: Lamka, Dec 9: In less than a month after Churachandpur witnessed the actual implementation of NREGS, its achievement has surpassed the common expectations and impressively convinced the Central Observer when he visited some of the work sites on Saturday. Visiting some of the work sites, the Central Observer, NK Sinha, Assistant Commissioner, NREGS, Ministry of Rural Development, Govt of India, gave an impressive remark on the overwhelming response NREGS has received from its 30,000 odd Job Card holders in Churachandpur. “I am very happy with the way people of Churachandpur have responded to the scheme in the last 15 to 20 days. It is tremendous. Certainly the programme is going to take off in this area,” he said.
