Women killed in New Samtal blast:

In a tragic incident, three women were killed when a bomb exploded while they were working under the NREGS programme at New Samtal area in Chandel district at about 12 noon on Monday.

The incident took place while the women were clearing the road.

The three victims have been identified as Lhingkhonem (45), Hoikim Guite (45) and Paumeng Haokip (43). Many others were injured in the bomb blast.

Nurses retract:

Following the assurance given by the Health and Family Welfare Minister to consider at least some of the demands of the striking nurses after the end of the ongoing Assembly session, Nurses Association of Manipur has called off its cease work strike with effect from Monday.

The decision to call off the cease work strike was taken after a serious deliberation on the assurance of the Health Minister during an emergency meeting of the general body of the Association, its general secretary N Memchoubi Devi informed.

The cease work strike would remain suspended until further order of the general body, Memchoubi said, while appealing to all the members of the Association to resume their normal duties from Tuesday.

NSCN-IM man held:

Based on specific information, a team of Imphal East Police Commandos apprehended one NSCN (I-M) activist during frisking and checking operation at Lamlong at around 4.30 am on Monday.

According to a statement issued by the SP of Imphal East District, L Kailun, the arrested NSCN (I-M) activist has been identified as Theimiyo Friz KW (30) s/o Yarsing KW of Nungshang Chingthak of Ukhrul District.

One letter written as 'speech of S/S Gen (retired) VS Atem', emissary to the collective leadership of NSCN on the 29th raising day of NSCN cum martyrs park inauguration of NP Bn HQ, Naga Army was recovered from his possession.

On spot verification, Theimiyo disclosed that he joined NSCN (I-M) through one Shimray Akui of NSCN (I-M), said the statement.

JAC refuses to take back body:

With the proposed meeting with the Chief Minister failing to materialise on Monday, the body of Nongmeikapam Shyam who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen is still lying in the mortuary of RIMS as the JAC formed in connection with the incident has refused to take back the body.

A joint meeting with the Chief Minister is likely to be convened at 1 pm on Tuesday to resolve the matter.

The JAC has been demanding the Government to pay ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the bereaved family, providing a suitable job to the eldest son of the deceased and the benefit of salary allowances and pension to the mother of the deceased.

Meanwhile, in protest against the killing, around 200 Meira Paibis staged a dharna at Oinam Lamkhai on Tuesday.

In case of failure to arrive at any amicable solution during the talks with the Chief Minister tomorrow, the JAC has decided to take recourse to other intense form of agitation in this regard.

Kakwa protests shop owner’s shooting:

A mass sit in protest was held at Kakwa bazar in Imphal on Monday against the shooting of a 27-year-old shop owner by unknown gunmen on Saturday evening.

A large number of Kakwa residents, including the members of the Kakwa bazar board and meira paibis participated in the sit-in-protest held at the Kakwa Bazar over the shooting.

According to reports, Konthoujam Pilot Singh, 27 is from Singjamei Thongam Leikai and operates a variety store in Kakwa bazar. On February 2 at around 8.15 pm, two unidentified persons came and shot at him, wounding in his right thigh. He is currently hospitalised at Shija Hospital, Langol.

Speaking to mediapersons, Kakwa Bazar Board members participating in Monday’s sit-in-protest called on all concerned to stop targeting the innocent people and demanded that the government should take immediate action against the culprit. They also appealed to the concerned not to commit such crime again in the future.

Banners and placards with slogans reading, ‘Nongmagi Chara Thanjariba Dukan Phambasingda Awaba Pibiganu’, ‘Micham Da Khut Thaganu’, ‘Apikpa Wakhallon Thadok-u’ were displayed at the protest site.

AMCTA threatens agitation:

The All Manipur College Teachers’ Association (AMCTA) has threatened to launch an agitation from the beginning of next month if the state government failed to fulfil their demands to extend their service age as per the UGC guidelines and filling up of existing shortage of teachers in various colleges of the state.

According to the statement of the association, as per 1997 ordinance of UGC the existing strength of 1918 teachers in various college will be reduced to only 888 by April this year and there will be more complications for the state to handle the situation. As a result the association has appealed to the state government to take necessary action to fill up the shortage of teachers in the colleges of the state before the students bodies take up serious forms of agitations.

AR seizes peacock feathers:

A total of 48 bags of peacock feathers were seized from two trucks during checking at the 20 Assam Rifles post at Bongyang on the Imphal-Moreh route about 10 am on Monday.

Informing this, the post commander Major Abhishek Bharti, said that 30 bags were recovered from a Tata truck bearing registration number MN-01/7108 while another 18 bags were seized from another Tata truck bearing registration number MN04/8125.

The driver of the first truck has been identified as Tomba Singh (45) while the driver of the second truck is identified as T Budhi (42).

There were altogether 8 persons in the two vehicles, said the post commander, and added that the two vehicles were heading towards Moreh from Imphal when they were intercepted.

All the 8 persons along with the seized feathers have been handed over to the Tengnoupal Forest office, said Major Abhishek.

This is the second major seizure of wild life parts by the 20 Assam Rifles post at Bongyang in the last few days.

On January 30, 304 wild deer horns were confiscated from a bus headed towards Moreh from Imphal.
