Lilong, Oinam Sawombung Erupt
Public protest after twin murders:
Imphal, Feb 3: Protests erupted at Lilong and Oinam Sawombung on Sunday after two separate shooting incidents on Saturday night that resulted in the death of two men belonging to these two localities.
Residents of Lilong took out a protest rally and briefly blockaded the Indo-Burma road on Sunday afternoon after a local pan shop owner was shot dead by unknown persons late on Saturday evening.
Residents of Oinam Sawombung blockaded the Mayai Lambi indefinitely over the killing of a local youth, also on Saturday night.
One Md. Taliburahman 35, hailing from Lilong Litam Makhong was shot at by two uindentified gunmen while he was sitting inside his shop at Lilong bazar on Saturday evening around 7.15 pm. The victim, who sustained a single bullet wound to the head, died on the way to hospital.
In connection with the killing, the Lilong Bazar Shopkeepers’ Welfare Society organised a public meeting on Sunday at Lilong bazar and formed a joint action committee to take further course of action on the issue.
Later, some 400 people marched in a protest rally from Lilong bazar upto Lilong police station on Sunday afternoon around 12.45 pm and submitted a memorandum addressed to the chief minister demanding immediate booking of the culprits and their punishment according to the law. The memorandum also seeks adequate compensation to the bereaved family.
During the course of the public meeting and protest rally, the entire Lilong market stayed closed. The Indo Burma road was also blockaded from 11 am till 2 pm.
On the other hand, the body of Md. Taliburahman is still kept at the RIMS morgue for post mortem.
Meanwhile, the residents of Oinam Sawombung have launched an indefinite Mayai Lambi bandh from from this afternoon to protest against another killing by unidentified gumen suspected to be UGs on Saturday night.
The deceased, identified as Nongmeikapam Shyam Singh 40 son of late N. Iboton Singh of Oinam Sawombung Mayai Leikai, chowkidar of the Sawombung Junior High School, was found shot dead on Sunday morning at Samurou Makha Leikai Nambul Mapal, under Wangoi police station.
A public meeting was organised at Sawombung bazar on Sunday morning around 11:30 am in connection with the killing, and a JAC has been formed.
Later, as resolved at the meeting, a mass protest rally was carried out from Oinam Lamkhai to Sawombung keithel after the Mayai Lambi road was totally blocked by the public.
The agitators carried placards and banners with slogans reading, ‘We condemned the killing of Shyam’, ‘Clarify reason for killing Shyam’, ‘Book and punish the culprits’,
‘We want to maintain peaceful atmosphere’.
The rally ended around 3 pm on Sunday afternoon after the rallyists finally gathered at the Sawombung bazar.
Family and JAC representatives claimed the deceased was an innocent man.
They also informed that two unidentified persons come to his house yesterday evening and asked for him, though he happened to be out at the time.
The family believes that he was abducted on his way home from Kakching on Saturday evening by his unknown killers.
His dead body is still unclaimed by the family waiting for a decision to taken by the JAC.
