JAC objects extension of Imphal Airport:

A joint meeting of the JAC Against Acquisition of Land for Expansion and Extension of Imphal Airport with representatives of various civil organisations has resolved to urge upon the Government to develop Imphal airport within the existing area of 600 acres, informed a press release issued by the JAC.

The joint meeting held on Saturday at Manipur Press Club, Imphal, was attended by representatives of CCDD, AMUCO, UCM, HERICOUN, UMO etc.

The meeting agreed that the Government plan to acquire additional 512 acres of land cannot be justified.

In case the Government decides to go ahead with the land acquisition move, the JAC and the civil organisations will stand firm to foil the move. If the Government fails to pay heed to democratic forms of protest, the JAC together with the civil organisations will take recourse to violent modes of agitation, it warned.

Mithamana traders tonsured as penalty:

In continuation of its drive against tobacco products, the central bureau of the Division-VI of the proscribed RPF/PLA has pulled up and tonsured heads of two women who were trading in Mithamana on the sly.

The two women who were penalised and subsequently released after giving proper advice against selling tobacco products in future are identified as Laishram Ongbi Inaotombi Devi (30) w/o Ibomcha of Thinungei Makha Leikai and Laishram Ongbi Rasheswori Devi (38) of Ningthoukhong Mathak Ward no.3 .

Parading both before reporters somewhere in Churachandpur district on Saturday, a spokesperson of the department of communication and publicity of the outfit informed that Inaotombi and Rasheswori were pulled up from Ningthoukhong area today while returning after procuring Mithamana worth Rs 5000 and other tobacco items like Zarda, Khaini, Talab and Raja Khaini worth around Rs 1000 from a non-Manipur running a shop at the bus parking of Singhat in Churachandpur.

They were about to supply the banned products in shops of Ningthoukhong area.

ZPC for protection of Zou identity:

While seeking the support and co-operation of all the people in protecting the identity of Zou tribe, the Zou People Council (ZPC), Manipur has decried the measures being made by SDC, SDO and DC Chandel to bring about changes in the chiefship of three Zou villages of Sajik Tampak area namely Khullen Khailet, Zoumunom and MT Thangjol after the said villages have been forcefully abolished at the behest of United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF).

In a statement made on Saturday, chief convenor of ZPC Nelson Zou categorically stated that if further efforts are made in this direction, then the Government of Manipur would be denounced as supporter of UKLF and ZPC and all the people living in the surrounding area of Sajik Tampak wouldstand as one against any attempt to supress Zou community.

ZPC would also make every possible efforts to save and protect the identity of Zou people and show the world that Zou people are even ready to sacrifice their lives for the cause of protecting their identity, Nelson Zou said.

The instigation of the UKLF to force Zou people to fall prey to the net being spread out to disintegrate Manipur would be also prevented by the united effort of Zou people, he added.

KLO/KLA claims hand in attack:

The armed outfit KLO/KLA has claimed the responsibility for Friday’s bomb attack at the Kongpal Laishram Leikai residence of contractor Laishram Saratchandra.

Information and publicity secretary of the Kuki outfit Malsawm Kuki said that the bomb attack at the residence of Saratchandra on Friday was he first warning against him.

Inspite of having given contact number over and over again by the outfit for resolving certain matters, Saratchandra did not responded and remains adamant.

Over and above this, he was responsible for informing the Police Commandos who shot dead a cadre of KLO/KLA near the gate of his residence, Malsawn charged.

It would be to his own good if Saratchandra contacted the outfit.

However, if he tries to challenge the outfit, then he would not be spared, Malsawm warned.

The information and publicity secretary of the Kuki outfit has also asked S Gourakishore of Konthoujam Kangjeibung who works in the treasury and Deputy Director of Watershed Management Konthoujam Lokhon to surrender to the outfit at the soonest possible.

TMNL appeals, seeks explanation:

The Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL), the apex youth council of Tangkhul community has reiterated its appeal to all the NGOs working in the field of HIV/AIDS to implement their programmes and projects sincerely instead of hijacking fund for their own personal gain.

Countering the charges levelled against the District AIDS Committee in connection with selection of NGOs for opening of one Community Care Centre at Ukhrul district under MACS by secretary of Kaphung Reisang Long Reisang Shinglai, general secretary of TMNL Ramreiyo Makang said that the charges against the DAC and other NGOs particularly the TMNL are baseless and smacks of a malicious intention to tarnish the image of the DAC and the NGOs.

TMNL has also sought an explanation call from Reisang Shinglai asking him to attend its office on January 31. Failing which necessary action would be initiated against him accordingly, Ramreiyo Makang said.

RPF imposters pulled up:

Two individuals accused for thrashing nine labourers at Mangol Garden, Leimaram Waroiching by posing themselves as RPF/PLA cadres on Friday night have been pulled up by the outfit.

The two assailants are identified as Ningthoujam Sanatomba alias Ingocha (22) s/o Gouramani of Leimaram and Leichonbam Brajamani alias Jiten (23) s/o Amu of Leimaram Waroiching.

After parading the two imposters before media persons at a location in Churachandpur district on Saturday, the outfit penalised and counselled them not to indulge in such anti-social and anti-party activity in future.

They were later handed over to their family members.

According to the labourers, Sanatomba and Brajamani entered into their makeshift camp at about 5 pm on Friday.

Claiming that they were cadres of the RPF/PLA, the two imposters asked the labourers to lie down on the ground and they started vandalising the articles kept inside the camp.

Soon after, Sanatomba and Brajamani started thrashing the labourers with a wooden plank.

New ICU wing opened at RIMS:

Prof L.Fimate, director of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, on Saturday inaugurated a 8-bedded Medical Intensive Care Unit in the Department of Medicine.

Speaking on the occasion Prof Fimate said that the opening of the unit was yet another feather in the cap of RIMS which is being upgraded to the level of the AIIMS.Although the beds had been provided there some sophisticated equipments and other requirements including oxygen connections, etc are yet to be installed.

He disclosed that there is no dearth of funds for the same. However some local problems are obstructing the speedy installation of the equipment.

He urged other faculty members for opening such specialised units for the benefit of the patients. He also disclosed that the funds for the phase II constructions would be released soon.The higher authorities had asked some queries and these had been attended to. As a result the vertical and horizontal expansions of RIMS would be undertaken very soon, he said.

AIDS worker leaves for Africa:

Psychologist Dilip Singh Wangkhem of the United Voluntary Youth Council (UVYC) left Imphal for Tanzania, South Africa on Saturday.

The Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO) United Kingdom selected him as a VSO volunteer and Singh will work there in the field of care and support for HIV/AIDS patients.

He will be attached to an organisation called Care International, Kinondoni Dare-Asalam, Tanzania for one year. Besides, the AIDS programme he will introduce various appropriate rural technology to the rural people of Tanzania.

Dilip Singh has worked for four years as a psychologist of MANGAAL de-addiction centre, Torbung under UVYC. During his assignment period he introduced and contributed many innovative works to the recovery female addicts as well as persons with disabilities.
