Airport Expansion Plan

Protestors’ march to Assembly stopped:

Imphal, Feb 4: Protestors who were marching toward the Assembly demanding immediate withdrawal of the move being made by the State Government to acquire over 512 acres of land from Malom and its surrounding area in connection with the proposed expansion of Tulihal Airport were stopped by the police leading to a confrontation and traffic jam at Keishampat Junction here on Monday.

In case the Government fails to come up with a definite stand on the issue at the earliest possible, the JAC formed in this connection has threatened to step up its stir along with the support of other social organisations.

Responding to the call of the JAC Against Acquisition of Land for Expansion and Expansion of Imphal Tulihal Airport, a large number of protestors started marching toward the Assembly from Kwakeithel Bazar area at around 12.30 pm on Monday.

As the slogan shouting protestors carrying placards with inscribed slogans like 'No to expansion of Airport', 'Government should not encourage bloodshed', 'Don't deny the livelihood of the people', 'Agricultural land should not be disturbed', ' Government of Manipur is anti-people', 'Say no to usurpation of residential land', etc approached Keishampat Junction, they were stopped by the police who were already there.

Infuriated at the police action, the protestors tried to break through the barricade and police cordon. The ensuing confrontation lasted for more than half an hour. Following the confrontation, there was traffic jam along the Tiddim Road for sometime.

However, after the arrival of top police officials, the situation was brought under control and regulation of the traffic resumed.

The Police have even kept the service of the water cannon vehicles Varuns on stand by in case the mob got out of control.

After turning back from Keishampat Junction, the protestors convened a public meeting at Malom Bazar wherein the decision of the Government to acquire land for expansion of the airport was rejected outrightly.

Along with resolving to step up the ongoing agitation until the Government comes up with a definite stand on the issue, the meeting also categorically resolved that the State Government should be held responsible for any untoward incident that may occur during the course of the agitation.

Representatives of NEEPCO, MEELAL, MAFYF, AMUCO, UCM, Mapi Council, COHR, Salai Apunba Nupi Lup and CCDD were also present during the meeting.
