DESAM demands white paper on Prof Islamuddin killing

Imphal, June 20 : The Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has demanded 'white paper' from the government on the killing of Professor Islamuddin and urged to immediately release the five students who were detained under National Security Act (NSA) in connection with the killing. In a statement the Publicity and Propaganda Secretary of DESAM, KC Ibomcha made clear the position statement of the students' body on the detention of some students under NSA while also pointing out the achievements of the students' body since its inception in 2002. DESAM has conducted survey in educational institutions and detected the ailments of the education system, the statement stated. Remedial measures to address the defects have also been suggested with due consultation with experts, teachers and concerned individuals, and the fruits have already been enjoyed by the state, it added. Four MU deans released after abduction: Four deans of different departments of the Manipur University were reportedly detained by some unidentified persons suspected to be cadres of an underground group early on Thursday and later released unharmed at night. The four officials who were abducted were the Dean of Humanities O Ibochou, Dean of Students Md Islamuddin, Dean of Life Sciences PS Jadav and Dean of History Mangsatabam Jiten. Reports said that they were taken into custody by the miscreants on Thursday around 5.30 am and later released at night at around 7.30 pm. The report of their release, however, could not be immediately confirmed. A highly reliable report said that they were summoned apparently in relation with some matter concerning the administration of the university by an underground group. Call for quality education: Imphal, Jan 3: Call for providing education which can ensure the livelihood of the people reverberated at the 6th foundation day of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) was celebrated today along with participation by students, teachers and representatives of various social organisations at GP Women's College here on Thursday. The foundation day function was attended by titular king of Manipur Leishemba Sanajaoba as chief guest, president in-charge of DESAM PC Newton as functional president and social worker Ningthouja Lancha and former Dean of School of Social Science, Manipur University Prof Kh Bimola as guests of honour.
