Tangkhul bodies say no to IRB, Commandos

Imphal, June 19 : The one day public consultative programme to maintain peace and tranquillity in Ukhrul district organised by Tangkhul civil organisations at Rashing hall yesterday has resolved to demand immediate withdrawal of IRB and commandos from Ukhrul. A joint press release issued by Tangkhul Naga Long, Tangkhul Katamnao Shaklong, Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long and Tangkhul Shannao Long asked as to what prompted the Government to deploy IRB and commandos in Ukhrul district when there is allegedly no law and order problem. The consultative meet demanded revocation of disturbed area status from Naga areas of Manipur and the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act as well. It resolved to participate and support the vexed Indo-Naga peace process. The Tangkhul civil organisations also conveyed deep concern over the establishment of designated camps by the State Government harbouring thousands of Kuki armed cadres in Naga areas, particularly at strategic sites and national highways. Hundreds turn up for physical test: Imphal, May 5: With the Government deciding to provide arms to the people of Heirok for their self defence, the recruitment drive for selecting 300 Special Police Officers started on Monday with the physical test held at Heirok Part II Mela Ground from 8 am to 4 pm. Personally supervised by DGP Y Joykumar, the physical test was conducted in the presence of Thoubal SP, Clay Khongsai, officers of Thoubal police and officers from the IRB. Candidates aspiring to be SPOs at Heirok wait for their turn for the physical test From early morning, hundreds of aspirants started streaming to the Mela Ground to take part in the physical test armed with the needed documents and waited for their turns in a long queue. Altogether 460 candidates applied for the posts of the 300 SPOs. Four MU deans released after abduction: Four deans of different departments of the Manipur University were reportedly detained by some unidentified persons suspected to be cadres of an underground group early on Thursday and later released unharmed at night. The four officials who were abducted were the Dean of Humanities O Ibochou, Dean of Students Md Islamuddin, Dean of Life Sciences PS Jadav and Dean of History Mangsatabam Jiten. Reports said that they were taken into custody by the miscreants on Thursday around 5.30 am and later released at night at around 7.30 pm. The report of their release, however, could not be immediately confirmed. A highly reliable report said that they were summoned apparently in relation with some matter concerning the administration of the university by an underground group. Two cops hurt: Imphal, Dec 20: One Police Commando and one IRB personnel sustained injuries following heavy exchange of firing between underground activists and Thoubal Police Commandos at Salungpham under Thoubal Police Station at around 12.10 pm on Thursday. According to information culled from the site of the incident, at around 7 am on Thursday, Thoubal Police intercepted report of factional clashes involving PREPAK cadres including one ‘Sidaba’ who is the Thoubal District Commander of the outfit at Ukhongshang. Consequently, four teams of Police Commandos led by OC Kishore- chand rushed to the area. However, as they could not find anything amiss there inspite of searching the area thoroughly, the Commando teams turned back. City Inn Hotel Shootout

3 KYKL cadres, including Lt Great, killed: Imphal, Dec 10: Three cadres of the underground Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup, KYKL, including a self-styled lieutenant, were killed by a combined team of police commandos from Bishnupur and Imphal west districts inside a city hotel on Monday morning around 10:15 am. The police recovered one AK-47 rifle with one magazine containing 22 live rounds, one 9mm pistol with three live rounds and one .36 hand grenade in the wake of the encounter that took place at the City Inn hotel at North AOC under Imphal west police station. According to a press statement issued by the SP Imphal West Clay Khongsai, the incident took place when a team of Bishnupur district police commandos assisted by Imphal West police commandos raided the hotel this morning following a tip off of the presence of some hardcore KYKL activists.
