City Inn Hotel Shootout
3 KYKL cadres, including Lt Great, killed:
Imphal, Dec 10: Three cadres of the underground Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup, KYKL, including a self-styled lieutenant, were killed by a combined team of police commandos from Bishnupur and Imphal west districts inside a city hotel on Monday morning around 10:15 am.
The police recovered one AK-47 rifle with one magazine containing 22 live rounds, one 9mm pistol with three live rounds and one .36 hand grenade in the wake of the encounter that took place at the City Inn hotel at North AOC under Imphal west police station.
According to a press statement issued by the SP Imphal West Clay Khongsai, the incident took place when a team of Bishnupur district police commandos assisted by Imphal West police commandos raided the hotel this morning following a tip off of the presence of some hardcore KYKL activists.
While carrying out room-to-room search at the third floor of the hotel, unknown armed persons fired towards the police commandos from one of the rooms and there was an exchange of firing from both sides for about 10 minutes.
Another team of commandos who covered the terrace of the hotel were also fired upon by one another suspected UG and in retaliatory fire the latter was shot dead at the top floor of the hotel.
A police commando officer involved in this morning`s operation in the meantime said during the room to room search, at the third floor of the hotel, one of the suspected UGs holding a hand gun attempted to escape towards the top floor after opening fire in the direction of the police commandos and he was shot down at the top floor after a brief chase.
While another team of police commandos was attempting to enter room No. 202 at the third floor of the hotel, the room`s occupants opened fire on them, the officer said.
The police immediately retaliated, resulting in killing of two other UGs inside the room. An Ak-47 rifle along with one magazine and 22 live rounds and one .36 hand grenade were recovered from the room, he said.
On the other hand, all the slain UGs were found with multiple bullet wounds. One of the slain UG inside room No. 202 was found on the bed and other one just at the door of the attached bathroom.
In the meantime, according to the assistant manager of the City Inn hotel, Vikash, 35, the three deceased had booked rooms No. 201 and 202 yesterday afternoon around 1.30 pm in the name of one Prakash, 48, son of Ibomcha.
The deceased also informed that they had returned from Shillong and would leave for Guwahati today.
According to the manager, around 9.45 am this morning two police commandos in civil dress entered the hotel and detained him at gun point at the hotel counter. Soon after, commando personnel in uniform entered the hotel and began room to room searches.
The manager said he heard several gunshots at the third and top floors of the hotel some time after the search began, and the commando team left soon after.
He said, another commando team also arrived at the spot just after the first party left the hotel, and along with them he entered room no. 202 where he found two bullet riddled dead bodies, and another one at the top floor. Later, the bodies of the deceased were picked up from the spot by the Imphal west police and deposited at the RIMS morgue this morning.
The UG who was killed at the top floor of the hotel was identified by his family this afternoon as Hamom Phulendro alias Great alias Sunil, 37, son of H Khellemba of Bishnupur ward no. 1, who reportedly held the rank of lieutenant in the KYKL.
Family sources said the deceased Phulendro alias Great had joined the KYKL some six years back and he was a married man though he had no children.
In the meantime, the statement issued by the SP Imphal West mentions that the deceased self styled Lt. Great was suspected to be involved in various ambushes on the security forces, including the ambush on a 1st IRB convoy returning from duty during the 3rd phase state Assembly election on February 24 this year at Khoirok Lamkang near Laimaton, in which 16 IRB personnel were killed and seven others injured.
The identities of the other two slain UGs are yet to be ascertained, but both appeared to be Meitei, about 25 years in age and about 5 feet in height. One of the two was wearing a dark blue T-shirt, grey jacket, grey trousers, and sports shoes. The other one was clothed in a brown jacket, reddish T-shirt and grey cargo trousers and sports shoes.
