Meitei Pangals face ban

'Rebel' diktat finds takers:

Imphal, Dec. 8: The state government may have remained tightlipped about the issue but the People’s United Liberation Front (PULF) ban on short skirts today (Saturday) found support from the apex body of the Muslim women’s organisations in Manipur.

The militant outfit on Thursday imposed a ban on Muslim girls wearing tunics and skirts to schools and colleges from Class I and above from the next academic session in Manipur and announced that they should wear the traditional phanek, a long skirt, or a salwar that cover the legs upto the ankle.

“We welcome the move. In fact, we have been campaigning for a proper dress sense among our community,” Anwari Nurjahan Begum, president of United Manipur Muslim Women’s Development Organisation, said.

She said provocative and revealing dresses contributed to crimes and that a proper dress sense would not only ensure safety for a girl but also benefit society. Begum appealed to authorities of educational institutes to allow Muslim girls to wear phanek and salwar. Anwar Hussain, a student leader reiterated her views.

“Every sensible person should welcome the idea that girls should wear proper dresses. If all the women in the society cover up themselves wear proper clothes, crimes against them could be reduced to some extent,” Hussain said. He also said that wearing phanek would also provide a boost to the handloom industry. No official in the state education department was also willing to make any comment on the development.
