International Human Rights Day

Manipur gets up, stands up for its rights:

Imphal, Dec 10: Manipur on Monday joined the rest of the world in observing International Human Rights Day in commemoration of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations.

Comprising of 30 articles, the Declaration was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948 to ensure protection of the rights of their respective citizens by all the signatory State members. Since then every year December 10 is being observed as the International Human Rights Day all over the world under various themes. The theme for this year’s observance is ‘Dignity and justice for all of us’.

Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) observed the International Human Rights Day by organising a commemorative function at its Lamphelpat office complex on Monday with its Chairperson Justice WA Shishak as chief guest, member Ngangbam Nongyai as functional president and member Rajendro Singh Rajkumar and chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women Dr Ch Jamini Devi as guests of honour.

Giving the key note address of the function, Advocate Ch Narendra observed that the issue of Human Rights, from where it started and where it would end is an interesting issue for discussion. He said that the issue of Human Rights dated back to 17th centuries.

By 1791, fundamental rights of the people were recognised in the US. Subsequently, along with giving due recognition to the importance of fundamental rights of the people by other nations of the world, United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948.

Fundamental rights are also an important feature of the Indian Constitution as well, he said, while pointing out that rights have their corresponding duties.

Dr Jamini spoke on the deprivation of the rights of the women and children and said that the impact of insurgency, AFSPA and armed conflict are being felt more by the women and children in Manipur.

In his address as chief guest of the function, WA Shishak observed that it appears that MHRC has been set up not in accordance to the laid down provisions of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 but just for the sake of fulfilling the election manifesto.

Nevertheless, the Commission is not against anybody and all its members are performing their duties at their level best, the chairperson said.

While observing that enactment of good laws does not necessarily meant emergence of a peaceful society, Shishak categorically stated corruption has gone into every system in Manipur, thus affecting its people. What the people of Manipur need to do now is to join hands and fight against corruption, he exhorted.

Centre for Organisation and Research Education and Manipur Forward Youth Front also jointly observed the 60th International Human Rights Day at Press Club here with human rights activist Chonjohn as chief guest and MAFYF President Sapamcha Kangleipal as president.
