Zeliangrong post-harvest celebration ends:

Imphal: The annual post-harvest festival, Chakan Gan-Ngai celebration which was going on since December 5 at Luangrang (Nungnang) Village in Nungba sub-division of Tamenglong district concluded on Sunday.

The five-day long celebration of the biggest festival of the Zeliangrong people was marked by cultural events like Mairapmei (igniting of sacred fire), traditional sports, performance of ritual rites, presentation of dances and songs, joint dinners for Khangchu-Luchu/Thel-Khel (members of Boys’ and Girls’ dormitories), reading of future omen and trekking to Long-kumei peak.

Video film shooting of the event as documentary feature and research was another highlight of the celebra-tion. The same festival was celebrated at Tousem headquarters in last week of October this year.

Manipur Theatre Today Festival

‘Kumudini’ enthralls audience: Imphal: It is not often that a play provokes the audience to think. So when one comes along, it is an experience that not just entertains but also plays on your mind long after the curtain comes down. Watching M.C. Arun’s Kumudini, directed by M.C. Thoiba of Banian Repertory Theatre and staged at the Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy in Imphal on December 20, one was impressed as much by the intricacies of the unfolding plot as by the skill and craft of the director and his actors. Kumudini is a commentary on Manipuri women and their social status in relation to men. It deconstructs and reinterprets the social fabric of 19th century Manipur and the life and times of the queen of the same name, the widow of King Gambhir Singh, who liberated Manipur from the Burmese. Murder in Mumbai!

Manipuri girl found dead Imphal/Mumbai, July 15 : A 27-year-old Manipuri girl working as a customer relationship manager in a Mumbai five star hotel was found dead in her hostel at Marol in Andheri shortly after midnight on Friday. Ch. Alena’s body was found hanging by a dupatta from the balcony of the hostel she shared with three other girls, authorities at Hotel Leela Kempinski said. But injury marks in her private parts have raised suspicions that she may have been sexually assaulted before being strangulated. Though family members performed the last rites at Kongpal Kshetri Leikai of Imphal East this afternoon, they demanded a thorough probe by the Mumbai police into the circumstances leading to her death.
