Unification Among Nagas:

CNPO, NNP support unification

Dimapur, Dec 13: The Chandel Naga People’s Organisation (CNPO) has extended appreciation and support to various NGOs, groups and individuals initiating the move for Naga unity and reconciliation in a constructive way and affirmed its commitment to unity of all Naga community, irrespective of tribes and organizations, for a final solution to the Naga problem.

Clarifying that the Chandel public were in no way related to “recent press statement” regarding unification move, CNPO publicity wing in a press release said it was the desire of Chandel people to live in harmony and peaceful co-existence.

“Chandel people should not be misunderstood in any way, we have no ulterior motive or otherwise. Our intention is crystal clear -- oneness and love,” CNPO added.

CNPO also said it was grateful to their brothers in Nagaland for extending warm hospitality and love to the people of Chandel residing in Dimapur and other parts of the state, adding it had full faith that such good gestures would continue in future too.

Meanwhile, the Naga National Party (NNP) in a separate press statement welcomed any unity move that might be taking place recently among various armed groups, civil organizations or political parties. The NNP in a joint press release issued by president Ng. Hungyo, vice president Th. Rapei and general secretary S Muinao said “someone need to start to complete unification process so long as the movement does not exclude any Naga tribe.”

NNP also suggested that if unification under one banner becomes impractical, the other option might be to have equal representations in the negotiating committee, while maintaining their “respective status quo and reasoning together with mutual understanding and trust, talk with Govt. of India in order to achieve our long cherished common goal.” NNP also felt that though unification might not be the pre-requisite for talks, it was very essential at the present juncture.

“It is important to explore and identify the most capable leader from among all the groups to lead in the talk with the Govt. of India so that peace-process will see its light at the earliest,” the party added.

The Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) has dismissed “allegations” that the Sumis and WSH had their “own agenda” in the recent unification move, as unfounded, unwarranted and concocted with ulterior motives to derail the current unification process between the warring factions and to sow the seeds of hatred among the Naga families.

WSH president Hokishe Yepthomi and general secretary Akavi Zhimomi in a press release said such allegations by “various hitherto unknown organizations and individuals including MIP, NSCN (IM),” have not only sown the seed of suspicion among different sections of Naga societies but also “greatly pained us,” while adding that the unification process was brought about by like-minded factional leaders in response to the call of the Nagas.

Reiterating its support to the recent unification process initiated under the aegis of Nagaland GBs and DBs Joint Forum, as “endorsed” by the Naga Hoho, WSH appealed to all Nagas, irrespective of tribal affiliation, region, social and political affiliations and churches, to grasp the unification move as a God given opportunity for the Nagas and to wholeheartedly support the unification move, “lest we may not find such moment again.”

“Let us not be bogged down by silly assumptions, let us not divide among ourselves with narrow considerations, let us not stoop so low so that our adversaries take advantage of us, let us not create suspicion among ourselves and let us stand tall in our resolve to face the challenges” WSH appealed.

In line with the NBCC, the Western Sumi Baptist Akukuhou Kuqhakulu (WSBAK) has welcomed the unification move, saying it was the urgent need of Naga society.

Executive secretary, WSBAK, Rev. Vitoshe Swu in a press release said in the present context of Naga situation, when divisions and tensions were more visible than ever before, everyone had been called to the ministry of reconciliation, as it was a part of the ongoing mission of Jesus Christ.

“Our purpose here is to think distinctly as to how this problem can be effectively solved. ‘Unity is both a gift and a task, a reality possessed and a reality to be pursued,’” Rev. Swu said and added it was precisely in working practically together, regardless of tribes, that a sense of unity could be become real and alive.

“Every individual must be an agent of unity, reconciliation, and peace today. Therefore, let us deepen our commitment and join our hands to restore harmony in our land,” he added.
