Oust Ibobi Campaign

Chauhan leaves Imphal, no comments on regime change:

Imphal, Dec 13: Union Minister of State and AICC general secretary north east in-charge Prithivi Raj Chauhan left Imphal on Thursday after concluding his three-day visit to the state, making no comments on the question of regime change which rebel Congress MLAs are demanding.

Even though he refused to comment on the crisis, replying to questions raised by journalists at the concluding part of the inspection, Chauhan said, "I am satisfied with the works progress".

However, he refused to comment on the main purpose of his visit to the state, the question of replacement of Ibobi as chief minister of Manipur.

Officially Chauhan came to Imphal to inspect the status of the implementation of works taken up in the state with Central funds under the Prime Minister`s package. After his return to New Delhi he is scheduled to visit other states of the country where projects were taken up under the same package of the Prime Minister, an official source said.

On the other specific purpose of his visit, the crisis within the state Congress, he met the MLAs and district level presidents of the MPCC to take their opinion on the matter.

Chauhan had closed door audience with Congress MLAs one by one over a two-day period since his arrival from the national capital and flew back to New Delhi on Thursday after making no comments on the matter.

When querried by journalists on the present political crisis within the Congress, he simply said, "I am here as general secretary of my party," and made no further explanation.

Despite repeated questions from the journalists on the hot topic, he attempted to divert to other topics.

Today, before leaving Imphal, Chauhan inspected the progress of various projects taken up in the state under reconstruction plan included in the Prime Minister package like the capitol project, construction of multi-storey market complex at Khwairamband market and beautification works taken up inside the Kangla fort.

During his inspection of the capitol project site, he questioned officials in the presence of some ministers including the chief minister, on the reason behind the slow progress of the project.

The officials elaborately explained the reasons and said that due to the frequent disturbances in the transportation of materials from outside the state along the highway the project was delayed. They said frequent blockades and bandhs along the Imphal-Dimapur section of the NH-39 made procurement of construction items from outside the state very difficult.

They said the materials were mostly coming from Guhawati and upto Dimapur (Nagaland) not much delay was there. But the Dimapur-Imphal section of the highway was the most difficult to cover due to various problems.

The explanation of the officials of the work agencies at the site was supported by the ministers including the chief minister, O Ibobi Singh himself.

Ibobi supplementing the officials` account informed the Union minister that all the materials including cement for the construction purpose was brought in from outside the state through NH-39.

Even though the Union minister was accompanied by the chief minister O Ibobi Singh and most of the group of ministers still in his support, all the other ministers like Th Debendra, Y Erabot Singh etc. did not take part in the inspection.
