Kakching residents set deadline: Imphal, Feb 3: Kakching bazar observed a shutdown on Sunday in protest against the kidnapping of Naorem Keshwar Singh, an assistant engineer in the state electricity department, by cadres of an underground group on January 31. Several hundred Kakching residents, including members of the family of abducted engineer, also staged a massive sit-in protest at the Irabot Park, Kakching bazar over the kidnapping. A joint action committee has also been formed to take further course of action in connection with the issue. According to reports, shops and business establishments in the entire Kakching bazar, as well as vegetable and other vendors, also observed a shutdown in sympathy with the mass protest that began at 10 am in the morning. KRA (U) clarifies: Imphal, Dec 23: The newly established KRA (U) has clarified that the detention of four students at Guwahati while they on their way from Chandigarh to Imphal was not for ransom. The outfit’s publicity secretary Lenin claimed that the abduction was carried out to teach a lesson to one Executive Engineer of Manipur Police Housing Corporation for informing police leading to arrest of its cadres when they approached him for some monetary help for party’s fund. One son of the EE was among the students detained by the KRA (U). Even as the other students were asked to leave, they refused, Lenin said. He further asked officials of all Departments not to challenge or defy the KRA (U) and warned that any official disregarding the outfit will be dealt with severely. Engineer shot at by gunmen: Imphal, Dec 21: An executive engineer of the state IFCD Soubam Dhanabir, 52, was shot at both legs by unidentified gunmen at his house at Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai on Friday morning at around 7.30 am. The victim was evacuated to Shija Hospital where he is reported to be out of danger. According to Dhanabir, an unidentified youth walked into his living room without a word and shot him twice in both thighs. The youth fled the spot immediately afterwards along with another youth who was waiting at his gate on a motorcycle. Dhanabir was operated on at Shija Hospital and both bullets removed. Hospital sources said he was out of danger. Police sources believe the shooting to be the handiwork of the KCP (MC) group. IFCD EE Konjengbam Bheigyachandra abducted: Imphal, Dec. 7: An executive engineer of the Manipur irrigation and flood control department was abducted by unidentified persons on Wednesday, senior officials of the department said today. They said Konjengbam Bheigyachandra Singh, posted at Khuga multipurpose project in Churachandpur district, went missing after he left the head-office here on Wednesday morning. The department came to know about his abduction yesterday after Bheigyachandra Singh did not turn up for a meeting of senior engineers of the department and officials of National Project Consultative Corporation. The family of the engineer, who comes from Moirang in Bishnupur district, informed the department about the abduction. However, no group has claimed responsibility and the family could not offer any clue in this regard.
