Loktak water festival to promote tourism

Imphal, June 17 : Loktak Lake, which has the only floating wildlife sanctuaries in the world is a gift of nature to the people of Manipur. A three-day Loktak water festival was organised here recently to project and promote Loktak as a major tourist destination. The theme of the festival was ‘Save Loktak, Save Our Life’. This internationally important and biologically-rich lake besides being a unique wintering ground of various migratory waterfowls was the permanent home of many resident water birds. Organised by Loktak Development Authority (LDA) in association with Loktak Lake Fishermen Welfare Society at Thanga Chinglak Bazar, it was a major draw for people of Manipur. Several indigenous water sports like, boat race, swimming, fish-netting, plantation of indigenous Phumdi, fishing Dance were showcased to attract tourists. Focus on Loktak Lake

Legislation in place to curb Atha-phum: MLA Imphal, May 22: To prevent growing of Atha-Phum (artificially grown floating bio-masses) in Loktak lake again, a new legislation has already been enacted and implementation of the same started, MLA of Thanga Assembly Constituency T Mangibabu has informed. Mangibabu was speaking at a reception function hosted in his honour at Thanga Khoirom Hill today. The MLA has been recently felicitated with three awards, namely Bharat Excellence Award, Gems of India and North East Golden Personality Award in recognition of dedication to the service of the people. The awards have been given by Friendship Forum of India and International Penguin Publishing House, New Delhi. Imphal book fair winds up The Imphal Book Fair jointly organised by the State Central Library and Kolkata-based Raja Ram Mohun Roy Foundation wound up on Monday at Hapta Kangjeibung. The book fair started on December 16. This year’s Best Reader Award constituted by State Central Library went to Dr L Mangal Khuman of Nepra Menjor Mamang, Khwairakpam Leikai, Imphal. The Best Book Production award for the year went to “Khambi Meigi Mashasing,” a book translated into Manipuri by Dr Soibam Ibocha, a senior police officer while the Best Stall decoration was bagged by M/S Mittal Publications, New Delhi. UG held after shootout Troops of 7 Assam Rifles of 57 Mountain Division reportedly apprehended an underground activist after a brief shootout in Thanga at around 7.45 pm on Saturday. Commandos gun down two suspected militants Imphal East District Police Commandos reportedly killed two suspected underground activists during an encounter at Kongpal Laingam Loukol, four kilometer east of Porompat Police Station at around 5.10 pm on Sunday.
