UG held after shootout

Troops of 7 Assam Rifles of 57 Mountain Division reportedly apprehended an underground activist after a brief shootout in Thanga at around 7.45 pm on Saturday.

The cadre was identified as SS Sgt Maj Ningthoujam Samananda Singh of RPF (32) s/o N Budhi Singh of Nongmaikhong Mayai Leikai, a PIB Defence Wing statement said on Sunday.

Commandos gun down two suspected militants

Imphal East District Police Commandos reportedly killed two suspected underground activists during an encounter at Kongpal Laingam Loukol, four kilometer east of Porompat Police Station at around 5.10 pm on Sunday.

The Commandos have also claimed to have recovered one 9 mm pistol loaded with five live rounds of ammunition and one point 32 pistol loaded with one live bullet from the possession of the slain activists whose identities are yet to be established.

Accused AI absolves UPF

Retracting from his earlier statement purportedly given to ONK, AI Oinam Ibopishak of Zone-VI Education (S) has clarified that no amount of fund deducted from the Mid Day Meal Scheme under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan project of Zone-IV Bishnupur district had been ever diverted to United People’s Front (UPF).

Addressing a press conference at the Keishampat office of UPF on Sunday, AI Oinam Ibopishak said that the amount of the fund which UPF had allegedly levied from each school had infact been arranged by the headmasters concerned of the schools for subscribing the journal ‘Eikhoigee Panthung’ published by UPF in accordance to a decision of the All Manipur Elementary School Teachers’ Association (AMESTA).

Ibopishak had been earlier pulled up by the investigating team of ONK of the proscribed outfit KYKL for interrogation in connection with the alleged diversion of the fund released for implementation of Mid Day Meal scheme in the State.

Two PLA suspects killed in showdown with KNF (P)

Two suspected PLA cadres have been killed in a shoot-out with KNF (P) cadres at Nongpok Keithelmanbi Bazar about 13 kms North of Yairipok police station.

The shoot-out between the two UG groups which broke out at about 6 pm on Saturday night continued till 2 am on Sunday morning.

Villagers in the surrounding area said that they heard sounds of gun shots with loud explosions of bombs at regular intervals all throughout the night.

Panchayati advisor wants more devolution of power

Inspite of the celebration being held for the last 15 years to commemorate enactment of 73rd amendment of the Indian Constitution which aims at enhancing the power and functioning of the Panchayat Raj institutions, in Manipur power is yet to be devolved to the Panchayat bodies, Advisor of Manipur State Panchayat Parishad L Birenyaima has observed.

Speaking at the function of 15th commemoration on enactment of Constitution (73rd Amendment Act) at the office complex of Manipur Panchayat Bhavan at Porompat on Sunday, Birenyaima pointed that devolution of power to the Panchayat bodies is essential for development of the country as there can be no real development without developing its villages.

NSCN (IM) gifts jeep

With the amount deducted from the employees of Tamenglong District Council on the charge of dereliction of duty, NSCN (IM) Zeliangrong region bought a petrol run jeep and handed over to the same office on Sunday.

The jeep was handed over to the superintendent of the district council somewhere in Tamenglong district by the chief administrative officer, CAO of the Zeliangrong region of outfit NSCN (IM) today in presence of members of the district council teachers; association.

According to the CAO Abe, the vehicle was bought with the amount deducted from 30 staffs of the Tamenglong district council who were found absence and irregular in attending office and neglecting in discharging their official duties during inspection conducted by his cadres.
