CM’s Pledge on Pourabi

Hands over Rs one lakh ex-gratia:

Imphal, Dec 24: Terming the Pourabi bomb blast of December 16 last which claimed the lives of eight persons and wounded around 30 others as a cowardly act of terrorism, chief minister O Ibobi Singh on Monday pledged that the government would spare no efforts to find and punish those behind the blast.

The chief minister, who returned to Imphal from New Delhi on Monday afternoon, met representatives of the families of the deceased at his official bungalow shortly after his arrival in the state capital and handed over ex-gratia amounting to Rs. 1 lakh each.

However, the next of kin of two of the victims, L Devika daughter of Gulap of Keibi and P Ibethoi, daughter of Bungjao of Sekta Mayai Leikai, were not present apparently as they could not be informed in time.

Ibobi Singh, consoling the families, said the guilty persons who were behind the horrendous act would never be spared, asserting that every effort is being made to find and punish them.

Ibobi, while denouncing the bomb blast as a cowardly act, also categorically refuted the allegation leveled by the underground RPF/PLA that the blast had been triggered off by the state police. The police do not prey on innocent people, he said.

It may be mentioned, the RPF/PLA, while acknowledging that it had planted the bomb which had caused such carnage at Pourabi, had claimed that it had been set off deliberately by the police after getting to know of its existence from two PLA cadres arrested by them.

In the meantime, the chief minister at the gathering today also made a strong appeal to the general public to inform the police immediately if they spot anything unusual taking place, so that such incidents can be prevented.

The CM also informed the gathering that the state government’s ex-gratia policy would be revised very soon.

The ex-gratia for the deceased Oinam Bobby was received by his tearful widow Oinam Ongbi Baby, that of Sinam Surbala Chanu by her father S Thoiba, that of S Inao Chanu by her father S Gudhadhor, that of Singam Premananda by his widow Ibem, that of Soibam Bobby by his father S Bolo, and that of Khangembam ongbi Ibemcha Devi by her husband Khangembam Sanayaima.

Meanwhile, Voluntary Help Unit Committee, RIMS, which had been set up to aid the injured victims of the blast, has announced that a total of Rs. 13660 has been collected so far in the form of assistance from the public, of which Rs. 12408 has been spent on purchase of medicines.

The committee also appealed to the public to continue to donate generously to help the injured victims.
