Associate Professor confessed to RPF: Imphal, May 5: An associate professor of the Manipuri department, Manipur University, Rajen Toijamba has made a confession to the RPF/PLA in front of mediapersons on MOnday in connection with mark tampering in the recently held entrance test for the selection of Ph.D students in Manipur University on January 30 this year. The spokesman of the department of communication and publicity, RPF/PLA during a press conference held somewhere in Churachandpur district this evening disclosed that the associate professor had voluntarily turned up after being summoned by the RPF in connection with mark tampering in the selection test for Ph.D students in Manipuri department of the university. MUTSU protests reservation policy: Imphal, Apr 28: The Manipur University Tribal Students' Union (MUTSU) has called for a series of agitations to protest the reservation policy followed by the University. The students today called a strike within the campus and also decided to boycott the visit of a UGC team. Sources from the union said the tribal population in the state was more than 32 per cent, whereas, only 12 per cent reservation was provided to them. Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh said the state government had no say in the reservation policy of the university as was a Central university. However, he assured that the state government would urge the Union Human Resources Ministry to fulfill the demands of the tribal students. Security forces strike it rich: Imphal, Feb 5: Security forces have arrested five activists, including three PREPAK cadres and two PULF men in the last 48 hours. According to a statement of the SP (IW) Clay Khongsai a commando team acted swiftly upon receiving information of unknown miscreants attacking the Keishamthong Moirangningthou Leirak residence of Executive Engineer of Education (S) Department's Engineering Cell Yumnam Deben Singh at around 8.20 pm on Monday. While the commandos arrested one Koijam Warjit Singh (s/o) (L) K Yaima of Thongju Part-I Pheija Leitong from the incident site, three others managed to evade arrest. Describing Warjit as active member of the PREPAK, the SP said that one mobile phone (Nokia 6681) handset bearing No 9436871856 and paper chit having mobile phone No 9856907147 of Mukhesh (PREPAK) from was impounded from him. Four MU deans released after abduction: Four deans of different departments of the Manipur University were reportedly detained by some unidentified persons suspected to be cadres of an underground group early on Thursday and later released unharmed at night. The four officials who were abducted were the Dean of Humanities O Ibochou, Dean of Students Md Islamuddin, Dean of Life Sciences PS Jadav and Dean of History Mangsatabam Jiten. Reports said that they were taken into custody by the miscreants on Thursday around 5.30 am and later released at night at around 7.30 pm. The report of their release, however, could not be immediately confirmed. A highly reliable report said that they were summoned apparently in relation with some matter concerning the administration of the university by an underground group. Barak Valley Adventure Academy in the offing: Imphal, Dec 29: For the formation of Manipur Levy 2008 to undertake a "historic march of Manipur diaspora", the Barak Valley Adventure Academy will be set up in Bon Tarapur, Cachar in January. The name of Manipur Levy is closely associated with the history of Manipur as it was this same Levy which assembled at Barak Valley under Gambhir and Narsingh and marched on to Manipur to liberate the kingdom from the invading Burmese soldiers at the fag end of Seven Years' Devastation period (1819-26). After about 200 years, the unarmed Manipur Levy 2008 will be constituted together with the Manipuris now settling in Assam and Tripura. The Levy will set out on foot for Kangla from Cachar through Jiribam on December 16 next year. MU opens HR course: Imphal, Dec 18: A six-month Certificate Course in Human Rights and Duties Education was inaugurated on Tuesday at the Manipur University. Giving the inaugural address, Prof C Amuba, vice chancellor Manipur University, said, "In Northeast, particularly Manipur, we are living in the midst of conflict situation. political, ethnic, economic? We are riddled with so many conflict situations. In such situation, it is a good idea to understand our rights and duties." He opined that understanding human rights and duties will go a long way in lessening the existing conflict situations. Lauding the opening of the course, the VC said that with time, slowly the certificate course will be upgraded to diploma course and finally PG level course. Govt. releases Rs. 208.40 cr on a single day: Imphal, Dec 11: Manipur government released a huge chunk of plan fund amounting to Rs. 208.40 crores in a day on November 26 from funds available in the budget. An official source said that the finance department agreed to the authorization of such a huge amount for meeting expenditures for implementation of projects under special plan assistance, in a move apparently related with the effort of the state government to achieve 70 percent plan expenditure by December 31. The released amount of Rs. 208.40 crores was 14.68 percent of the total outlay of 2007-08. The amount also exceeded the total expenditure incurred during seven months of the fiscal year 2007-08. The amount that was released on November 26 included a total amount of Rs. 57.50 crores for the construction guest houses at hill district headquarters including at Mao, Jiribam, construction of two floor Manipur Bhavan at Ulubari, improvement of Speaker and Deputy Speaker bungalow an...
