MU opens HR course:

Imphal, Dec 18: A six-month Certificate Course in Human Rights and Duties Education was inaugurated on Tuesday at the Manipur University.

Giving the inaugural address, Prof C Amuba, vice chancellor Manipur University, said, "In Northeast, particularly Manipur, we are living in the midst of conflict situation. political, ethnic, economic? We are riddled with so many conflict situations. In such situation, it is a good idea to understand our rights and duties."

He opined that understanding human rights and duties will go a long way in lessening the existing conflict situations. Lauding the opening of the course, the VC said that with time, slowly the certificate course will be upgraded to diploma course and finally PG level course.

In the presidential address, Prof Ksh Bimola, head of Political Science department and coordinator of the certificate course, said, "With violence becoming the order of the day, the study of human rights is becoming more pertinent. The main objective for opening this course is to sensitize the people of the state and make them aware of human values and dignity."

Prof Bimola also observed that with so many people working actively in defending and protecting human rights in Manipur, the course will provide the theoretical knowledge of human rights which can go hand in hand with the practical experiences of those who are actively working.

In his speech, the guest of honour Prof H Nandakumar, pro vice chancellor, gave a brief history of the world`s human rights movement. The professor stressed the need of discipline in upholding human rights.

With five faculty members and seventeen students, the certificate course in Human Rights and Duties Education will be held at the new building adjacent to Humanities Block of the University. The inauguration function was organized by the department of Political Science, MU.
