Imphal, Dec 21: An Indian People’s Tribunal on Stigma and Discrimination towards People Living with HIV/AIDS starts in Imphal on Saturday.

The two-day tribunal session, to be held at the conference hall of the institute of Cooperative Management, Lamphelpat, is being organised jointly by the Human Rights Law Network, with the Manipur Network of Positive People and the Social Awareness Service Organisation, SASO.

The stated objective is to find an answer to the question of how progress can be made in overcoming the stigma and discrimination against those living with HIV and AIDS, and to change people’s attitude towards AIDS.

The people`s tribunal aims to conduct an indepent inquiry by recording testimonies of various PLHAs who have been facing stigma and discrimination before an expert panel. This is to be followed by a workshop on the issue in question.

A detailed report comprising the findings and recommendations of the tribunal would also be submitted to government authorities and the concerned stakeholders, apart from being released to the public, said a release.

Addiction counselling: A day long workshop on addiction counselling in connection with the observance of World AIDS Day was held today at Lifeline Foundation.

Addressing the inauguration of the workshop, as guest of honour, L Gopal, vice-president, Lifeline Foundation, said that with the changing tiems and social environment, addiction counselling has to be multi-dimensional.

Gopal noted the need for developing proper counselling for those who are not yet affected by the disease of addiction, for those who are affected and also for the families of those who are affected by the disease of addiction.

Stressing the need for nurturing a generation free of HIV and AIDS, Gopal said that art and skill of counselling need to be empowered more.

Echoing the same need, guest of honour L Deepak president Manipur Network of Positive People said that counselling has become a challenging task in itself with trained counsellors required to counsel a six or seven-year-old HIV positive child who is on ART.

He said that with many becoming HIV positive for no other reason but that they have HIV positive spouses or parents, counselling has become a complicated art now.
