16th Imphal Book Fair

Call for govt. support in library movement:

Imphal, Dec 15: Giving out a clarion call to the state government for active participation in development of the library movement in Manipur, the 16th edition of the Imphal Book Fair was kicked off on Saturday at Hapta Kangjeibung in Palace Compound here.

The annual book fair event which has been attracting an increasing number of book firms from outside the state is being organised jointly by State Central Library, Imphal, and Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata.

Along with 14 local book firms, in all, 17 book firms from outside the state are opening their stalls in the fair this year.

The 17 book firms from outside the state which are participating in the book fair are Nevidita Books, Guwahati; Ekta Books, New Delhi; Supriya, New Delhi; Mittal Publication, New Delhi; Eastern Book House, Guwahati; DVS, Guwahati; Book Line, Kolkata; Cambridge University Press; Bani Mandir, Guwahati; Nayyar Book Service, New Delhi; Kavita Publishers, New Delhi; Macmillan India Limited, Guwahati; Kalyani, Guwahati; National Library; Guwahati; Asian Books, Guwahati; Sahitya Akademi, Guwahati; Standard Literature Associates, Guwahati.

The participating local firms are CD Cassette, Leihon Nunglon Sanglen; Rajesh Books, Global Books, Job Creation, Manipur Voluntary Health Association, Suresh Books, Jireh Books, Jagat Mata & Pita Books, AM & Sons (New Checkon), Sangam Books, P Prem Sharma, Leo Books and Sucheta Books.

MLA RK Anand Singh and Commissioner of Art and Culture P Bharat Singh inaugurated the book fair as chief guest and functional president respectively.

Speaking at the occasion, MLA Anand said that the government of Manipur should play an active part in developing library movement in the state.

While observing that books are the treasure house of knowledge, he noted that most of the problems being faced by the people today can be able resolved only when more and more people cultivate reading habits.

In his presidential address, P Bharat said that the government of Manipur has been making every possible measure to bring about a library movement in the state.

Efforts are on to construct a new building of the Central Library where many important books would be stored for the public, he added.

He said earlier the government used to set aside only Rs 4 lakhs for purchasing books in a year. But the amount has been increased over the years and this year a sum of Rs 15 lakhs was spent to procure many valuable books.

He further said a sum of Rs 1.20 crores has been received from the Central Government for construction of a new building of the State Central Library. The construction work would begin soon at the very complex where Central Library used to be, he said while appealing to all to ensure the past incident of setting fire the library building do not recur even if they have some genuine complaint against the government.

Speaking as a special invitee of the inaugural function of the book fair, historian RK Jhalajit called upon the people to cultivate the habit of reading books after a slight deviation from their craze over foods and clothing.

During the course of the book fair which would go on till December 24, various programmes like book release, meet the writers, interaction with Shumang Leela Artistes, meeting with librarian, film artistes, painting competition for children and session for the young poets and writers would be organised.

A symposium on the theme of ‘Role of library in cultivating the reading habit of the people’ would also be organised on December 21.
