Demand for Kamtapur State
1000-hr AKRSU bandh from January 1:
Guwahati: The All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) on Wednesday called a 1000-hour bandh in Assam and North Bengal beginning from January 1 next year and threatened to intensify their stir over their demand for a separate Kamtapur State.
AKRSU president Biswajit Roy, while addressing a press conference here condemned the act of ‘highhandedness’ against its activists on Wednesday, who were on fast-unto-death agitation in the city demanding Kamtapur state and ST status.
The student body further alleged that the district administration officials ‘forcefully’ evacuated the members of the Chilarai Sena, Kochraj Bonshi Mahila Samity and the AKRSU and admitted them in the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital.
Infuriated by the alleged highhandedness on the part of the district authorities, Roy said the student union would take up agitational programmmes like procession, bandh in the entire state particularly in the lower Assam districts to protest the State Government’s ‘insincere attitude’ towards their demand.
Sub Divisional Officer (Sadar) C K Bhuyan, however, rejected the allegation saying, “ The AKRSU activists were admitted to the Mohendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital because of their deteriorating health condition.”
The union activists, it may be mentioned, were on fast-unto-death since December 14 at the Lakhidhar Bora Khetra in the city’s Ambari area. The Koch Rajbongsis are one of the six communities in the State demanding ST status.
“The State Government is not at all sincere about the problems being faced by the Koch Rajbongsis. It is because of insincere attitude of the State Government that our demands are still not being looked into,” Roy alleged.
Six communities including the Koch Rajbongsis demanding Schedule Tribe status in the State on Monday turned down Union Tribal Affairs Development Minister PR Kyndiah’s invitation for talks.
The AKRSU president said the union would give ‘appropriate response’ to the government during the upcoming panchayat election in the state.
Moreover, the union has also called a 100-hour bandh in Dhubri district from December 21, 12-hour bandh in Nalbari on December 22, 48-hour bandh on December 20 in Bongaigaon and another 36-hour bandh in the undivided Kokrajhar district to press for their demand.
