Human Rights Concern in Samtal Op
MAFYF for Intl humanitarian laws:
Imphal, Dec 20: Manipur Forward Youth Front (MAFYF) has raised the demand for enforcement of International Humanitarian Laws in a conflict situation State like Manipur so that the people can live in peace and in liberty.
Interacting with mediapersons at the Sagolband head office of MAFYF on the sidelines of distribution of relief materials to the people of Dingpi area in Chandel district who have been displaced following the New Samtal Operation launched by the Indian Army to flush out UGs, general secretary of MAFYF Premjit Kshetrimayum said there has been no let up to the exodus of the villagers from Dingpi area since the army launched the operation on November 15.
MAFYF has been making every possible effort to help the displaced people and would continue to so, he said, while informing that any person who would like to extend their help in this regard may do so through MAFYF.
Premjit said that whether the Governments both at the Centre or at the State are ready to concede or not, people recognised that there is an armed conflict going on in Manipur.
From the statement released by the PRO of the Indian Army, Premjit said, it has been learnt that the Army operation in Dingpi area has been going on for over one month now and yet the Army has not been able to flush out the UGs from the area.
Moreover, it has been known from the press notes issued by the PROs of Indian Army or the IGAR (South) that the operation is to continue further, he observed.
So even if India Government has been trying its best to project the situation in Manipur as just a law and order problem to the international community, the double standard of the India Government in trying to cover up the truth instead of any sincere attempt to solve the problem is becoming clearer. In defiance of the various International covenants,
Indian Army has been suppressing the rights of the people of Manipur, Premjit alleged.
Premjit said that human rights organisations in the State have been raising their voices against use of landmines at various international fora. Yet some people have been trying to cause obstruction to the efforts being made to bring about any a permanent solution to the issue of Manipur, he said, adding that the rights of the people in Manipur can be protected only when there is enforcement of the international humanitarian laws in the State and demanded the Govt of India and other related authorities to do the needful for implementation of the same.
