National Award on Manipuri Filmmaker

Aribam Shyam conferred V Shantaram award:

New Delhi, Feb 4: Manipuri filmmaker Aribam Shyam Sharma has been selected for the V Shantaram Award for lifetime achievement in documentary film making.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was the chief guest at the inaugural function of the 10th Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short and Animation Films 2008, announced his name for the award amidst huge applause at the inauguration of the festival in Mumbai on Sunday night.

The award carrying a cash prize of Rs. 2.5 lakh, a citation and a shawl instituted by the Films Division, ministry of information and broadcasting will be conferred on February 9. It is for the first time in the history of Mumbai International Film Festival (MIIF) that a person from north east India has been awarded the prestigious award.

Bhagwan Das Garga was the first recipient of the V Shantaram Award for Life Time Achievement in the field of documentary in MIFF 1996 and other recipients were Fali Bilimoria in 1998, Vijaya Mulay in 2000, Kishan Lal Khandpur in 2004 and Ram Mohan in 2006.

Aribam Syam Sharma who arrived in Mumbai last evening for inauguration of the special package of 33 films from north east India at the biennial festival was overwhelmed when he heard the news. He said, "It is a big surprise to me. I never thought of such a grand honour."

Twelve times winner of national film awards, Syam Sharma represented India in several international film festivals, including Nantes, Cannes, London, Toronto, Locarno, and Montreal.

He was the first Indian who received the prestigious Grand Prix in the Nantes International Film Festival for his feature film - Imagi Ningthem (My Son, My Precious) in 1982.

Other films of acclaim that attracted worldwide attention include Ishanou (The Chosen One), the official selection (Un Certain Regard) for Cannes International Film Festival in 1991, and Sangai - The Dancing Deer of Manipur declared as the `Outstanding Film of the Year 1989` by the British Film Institute, London.

So far he has directed nine Manipuri feature films and 26 non-feature films. Born in 1936 in Imphal, Sharma`s cinematic journey started in 1972 with the first Manipuri feature film ‘Matamgi Manipur’ as a music director and actor.

He made his directorial debut in feature film with ‘Lamja Parshuram’ in 1974 followed by his first documentary ‘Sana Leibak Manipur’ in 1984. Sharma has also authored an autobiography ‘Living Shadow’.

Talking about his future plans, he said, “I am planning to make documentaries on Mr Manipur Pradip Kumar, Geet Govind and Manipuri classical dance forms. I love to make Manipuri feature films but I can`t take it up as it involves huge money.”
