Monika wins medals in Asian Weightlifting:

New Delhi, Apr 29: Laishram Monika Devi fetched the first medals for India in the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Kanazawa, Japan on Tuesday by finishing overall third in women's 69 kg category.
Monika lifted a total weight of 222 kg (100 in snatch and 122 in clean and jerk) to finish behind Liu Chunhong of China (262: 117+145) and Kao Ya-chun of Chinese Taipei (222: 98+124) respectively.
The Manipuri girl added a silver and bronze as she was second in snatch and third in clean and jerk.

Army Launches Tipaimukh Vigil:

Imphal, Apr 29: Troops of the 57 Mountain Division started patrolling the Tipaimukh Hydel Project site in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Tuesday after militants blew off a drilling rig and brought work to a standstill on Saturday.
Militants had blasted a drilling machine using an IED, forcing all engineers and workers to flee the project site, located on the Manipur-Mizoram border.
The Hmar Peoples Convention (Democratic) has claimed responsibility for the attack

Councillors take back resignation after CM assurance:

Imphal, Apr 29: Elected members of urban local bodies who submitted their resignation on Monday to the chief minister withdrew the same later after the chief minister urged them to give him some time to look into their demands.

Imphal, Apr 29: The All Manipur Auto-Rickshaw Owners' and Drivers' Association has appealed to all UG groups concerned to withdraw the monetary demands they made to the auto-rickshaw drivers.

Manipur crush Chandigarh in natl sub jr. girls' football:

Diphu, Apr 29: Manipur beat Chandigarh 17-0, Orissa blanked out Jharkhand 3-0, while Assam and Tripura held Haryana and Bihar respectively in 1-1 draws in the four matches of the 4th sub-junior (under-17) girl’s national football championship on Tuesday.
Goal getters for Manipur included Y Kamala (3), Bindyarani (4), Tejibala (2), bembem (3) and one each by Rinaroy, Meera, Santhalembi, Komlapati and Binodini.
Manipur will play Goa in its first quarter final match on May 3 .

Farooq (PULF) remanded to custody:

Guwahati, Apr 29: The Assam's Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday remanded the Peoples' United Liberation Front (PULF) chairman Kazi UmarFarooq to five days police custody.
Guwahati police which arrested Farooq from a rented house at Chasal area in Guwahati on Monday produced the Pulf chairman before the CJM court on Tuesday.

CM holds meeting to oversee draft project reports:

Imphal, Apr 29: Manipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh on Tuesday evening convened a meeting on the status of the preparation of the draft project reports, DPR of the projects to be funded under special plan assistance under the annual plan 2008-09.
The Planning Commission had agreed to the allocation of Rs. 550 crores as SPA component for the year 2008-09 while fixing the annual plan for the year 2008-09 at Rs. 1660 crores for the state.

No wages for NREGS job card holders:

Imphal, Apr 29: With high hopes they sent their children to school with a promise to the school authorities that they would pay the fees after getting the wages from their jobs under the National Rural Employment Generation Scheme. But many dreams have been shattered as the authorities have failed to clear their wages putting them under added financial pressure.
Authorities have not cleared wages of the job card holders under NREGS who were engaged under the scheme in Nungba area of Tamenglong district for 45 days during 2007-08, the president of the Nungba area village authority, G Poukhuleng said in a complaint to the state government as well as the Centre on Tuesday.

Meira paibis save harassed 16-year-old domestic help:

Imphal, Apr 29: A 16-year old domestic helper staying at a house at Ningthem Pukhri Mapal attempted to commit suicide on Monday night allegedly due to the torture and harassment meted out to her by her employer. She was, however, saved by the local meira paibis.

Murder of two Anal women; SP cracks case:

Imphal, Apr 29: Asserting that some break through has been made in the investigation of the murder of PS Snowy alias Julie (27) of Anal Khunou, Chakpikarong, and Louphu Esther Anala alias Romi (29) of Charangching, Chandel at Khekman under Thoubal district, the SP of Thoubal Clay Khongsai on Tuesday said that three accused have been rounded up.

Committee formed for protection of Singda dam:

Imphal, Apr 29: A committee called the Singda Protection Committee with PHED minister TN Haokip as chairman and IFCD minister as co-chairman was formed at a meeting held at the Singda IB on Tuesday.
Chiefs of the seven villages situated in the catchment area of the Singda dam are members of the committee with the principal secretary, forests as the secretary.

UNC, ANSAM, NPMHR condemn Govt. on Mapithel Dam:

Imphal, Apr 29: The United Naga Council, Naga Women Union (Manipur), All Naga Students' Association Manipur and Naga Peoples' Movement for Human Rights strongly condemned the recent Cabinet memo to go ahead with the Mapithel Dam construction activities.

Imphal, Apr 29: The soil testing constructed at Lamphelpat for Imphal West district by the Department of Agriculture was inaugurated on Tuesday by Agriculture Minister N Loken.

Six shops shut for selling tobacco products:

Imphal, Apr 29: In continuation of its drive against tobacco products, the proscribed outfit RPF has shut down six shops for six months for allegedly selling these banned substances during a drive conducted at Sangakpham Bazar on Tuesday.

UG groups to check SK oil price hike:

Imphal, Apr 29: The underground UNLF and KYKL have announced that they have decided to check the hike in price of kerosene (SK oil) while exploring the reasons behind the price hike of the same in the local markets.

Work at Capitol Project behind schedule:

Imphal, Apr 29: In the light of the massacre of 15 migrant workers in different parts of the State last month, problems faced in transportation of the required construction material from outside and frequent imposition of bandh and blockade among other hindrances, the deadline set earlier for completion of the construction work on the ambitious Imphal Capitol Project is likely to be extended further.
