Laishram Monika Fetches Weightlifting Olympic Berth:

New Delhi, Apr 30: With one silver and two bronze to their kitty in the ongoing Asian weightlifting championship in Kanazawa in Japan, Indian women have booked one berth for Beijing Olympics.
Laishram Monika Devi has fetched three medals for India in the women’s 69kg event in the final Olympic qualifying event which concludes on Thursday.

Khuga Dam to be Opened by PM in June:

Imphal, Apr 30: The construction of Khuga dam is expected to conclude next month and the dam is likely to be inaugurated by the first week of June by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
In this connection the chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh along with other ministers of the state visited the dam site to conduct an inspection on Wednesday morning.

Plan to Arm People Against Militants Discussed:

Imphal, Apr 30: The Manipur government is considering drafting a model or system to empower the local people against attacks and extortion etc. apparently in the aftermath of the Heirok and Lilong Chajing incidents during which people rose up against the militants and sought weapons from the authorities to protect themselves.
A highly placed official source said that the matter is being discussed with top officials of the Sashastra Seema Bal, SSB.

Protests at Wangjing After AR Detention of Youth:

Imphal, Apr 30: Traffic along the Imphal-Moreh section of the NH-39 was disturbed on Wednesday due to the sudden imposition of bandh on the route by outraged local people over the rounding up of two local youths by the Assam Rifles on Tuesday night on the charge of being members of the underground UNLF.
The bandh was, however, lifted after the Assam Rifles authorities handed over the youths to the Thoubal police station on Wednesday afternoon at around 4.40 pm, reports said.

Councillors not Withdrawing Resignation:

Imphal, Apr 30: Councillors said that there was no question of withdrawing their resignation papers.
Rather the remaining councilors who are yet to submit their resignation papers are planning to submit the same on Thursday at 2 pm to the chief minister, O Ibobi Singh, the general secretary of the All Manipur Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat Joint Action Committee said.

Arrested UG Cadres Brought Back:

Imphal, Apr 30: Seven hardcore militants including top leaders of the People's United Liberation Front, PULF and a hardcore cadre of the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, PREPAK who were arrested from different cities of the country were brought to Imphal on Wednesday.

State Women's Commission Faces Infrastructure Bottleneck:

Imphal, Apr 30: Despite its improper infrastructure and manpower, the Manipur Women`s Commission is performing its duty at its best level, said Dr. Jamini, the chairperson of the commission on Wednesday while speaking at the one-day family counselling education programme at Khomidok Gandhi Memorial PS ground.
