Ibobi assures compensation to affected people:
Imphal, May 1: Chief Minister O Ibobi singh has assured to suitably compensate the people affected by the construction of Khuga multipurpose dam in Churachandpur district, while visiting the dam site with a group of ministers on Wednesday. He also assured the people to take measures for the beautification of the dam areas to attract tourists.
Blockade over, Moreh trade resumes:
Imphal, May 1: Border trade hummed back to life in the border town of Moreh in Manipur’s Chandel district after transporters resumed services and government offices reopened.
Vehicles went off the roads and attendance in government offices was practically nil following a blockade by the All Tribal Women’s Organisation of Chandel at Japhou, the district headquarters, demanding punishment for the killers of two women, murdered last month.
Manipur to check bird flu outbreak:
Imphal, May 1: Health authorities in Manipur held a three-day seminar and training on methods here to check outbreak of bird flu in the State in the wake of the disease resurfacing in neighbouring Tripura.
The seminar was aimed at imparting knowledge and basic know-how to veterinarians and health officials to deal with a sudden outbreak of the disease in the state.
Eye problems rampant in northeastern region
Imphal, May 1: A survey conducted by the National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) has revealed that the northeastern States of the country, including Sikkim, have high level of eye-related problems.
During 2001-02, there were around 12 million blind people in the country. In the northeastern region, Asom had the highest number of blind people at 8,12,471 while Manipur had 32,963, Arunachal Pradesh 24,877, Meghalaya 17,065, Mizoram 6,950, Nagaland 20,881, Sikkim 3,513 and Tripura 24,572.
The total number of blind people in the eight NE states stood at 9,43,292.
Uttar Pradesh topped the country in the number of blind people with a figure of 15,60,897.
In the NE, 38,309 cataract cases were operated upon in 2005-06, 62,124 in 2006-07 and 49,073 in 2007-08 with the total number at 1,69,527.
The cataract cases operated upon in Manipur were 1,014 in 2005-06, 1,156 in 2006-07 and 242 in 2007-08. Arunachal Pradesh had 993 cases in 2005-06, 1,043 in 2006-07 and 1003 in 2007-08.
Asom had 28,268 cases 2005-06, 48,346 in 2006-07 and 37,969 in 2007-08. Meghalaya had 1,372 cases in 2005-06, 1,023 in 2006-07 and 907 in 2007-08. Mizoram had 1,211 cases in 2005-06, 2715 in 2006-07 and 940 in 2007-08. Nagaland had 741 cases in 2005-06, 5,833 in 2006-07 and 750 in 2007-08. Sikkim had 351 cases in 2005-06, 571 in 2006-07 and 530 in 2007-08. Tripura had 4,359 cases in 2005-06, 6,708 in 2006-07 and 6,732 in 2007-08.

HPC (D) opposes Tipaimukh power project:
Aizawl, May 1: The Hmar Peoples Convention (Democratic) has announced that it would oppose the construction of the Tipaimukh hydel project in Manipur.
The outfit claimed responsibility for the April 25 incident at Manipur’s Tipaimukh area where drilling machines of the NEEPCO were destroyed.
“The incident was a deliberate and necessary act in the interest of safeguarding our ancestral land and our people from destructive intervention by the Manipur Government and NEEPCO in the pursuit of imposing a dam,” a statement said.
The HPC(D) alleged that the ongoing drilling work at the site of the proposed Tipaimukh Multipurpose project, undertaken by the NEEPCO and the Manipur Government, involved the land, rights and dignity of the people especiallly those in the Hmar-inhabitated areas in Manipur and Mizoram.
It said the manner in which the first public hearing was conducted in Tipaimukh on March 31 was unacceptable and the villagers were not informed about the public hearing.

Accused house master expelled from locality:
Imphal, Apr 30: In connection with ill-treatment of Pinky, a young girl working as domestic help, a public meeting held on Thursady has decided to expel contractor Thiyam Rajgopal of Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal and his family members from the locality.
The public meeting held at the office complex of Nupi Khunai Chaokhat Lup located at Ningthem Pukhri Mapal was also attended by members of Maharaj Garibniwas Memorial Club, LCP, Nupi Khunai Chaokhat Lup and representatives from Heirok, the birthplace of Pinky.
She fights HIV in Manipur through disposable syringes:
New Delhi, May 1: Distributing syringes among drug users may hardly seem like the right way to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS. But N Nandadevi, a Manipur resident who has been given an award for exemplary work in public health, believes it is a pragmatic solution.
"If you have been working in my field long enough, you will realise that simply lecturing people is no solution to any problem," Nandadevi told IANS while she was in the capital to receive the Adarsh Stree award given by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Water scarcity hits Manipur hard:
Imphal, May 1: Disappearance of jungles in the catchment areas of Manipur’s major rivers, irregular power supply and leaking water supply pipelines are the main reasons for shortage of water in the State capital.
The greater Imphal area which has around five lakh population requires not less than 80 million litres of water daily. However, the State’s Public Health Engineering department’s urban sector could not even provide 50 per cent of required demand.
