CII award for state health worker:
Imphal, May 2: The Confederation of Indian Industry in its effort to promote women's empowerment at the community level has instituted an award known as Women Exemplar for grassroot community women who have excelled in different fields of work thereby making a significant contribution to the development process.
Since 2006 the award has been given to women of the country for their outstanding contributions to the society. For the year 2008 the award was given to Manipur Voluntary Health Association`s program director N Nanda for health by the chief minister of Delhi Sheila Dixit on April 29 at the Le Meridien Hotel, New Delhi.
50-yr-old suffers fatal stroke after UG demand:
Imphal, May 2: In a bizarre incident a 50-year old headmaster of a primary school died after suffering from a BP stroke on April 30 at Moreh after he was asked to give Rs. 5 lakhs by one of the valley based UG groups, sources said.
The victim, Naorem Bisembor, 50, of Tentha Khunou, was summoned by a UG group to Moreh in connection with a monetary demand of Rs. 5 lakhs. Accordingly he went to Moreh but suffered a BP stroke there on April 30 at around 8 am. The Moreh police has registered a case.
Another strike on in state even as one ends:
Imphal, May 2: Even as the BJP sponsored general strike concluded midnight tonight, another general strike called by the All Manipur Written Test Successful Candidates Association for Primary Teachers, 2006 which commenced from 6 am today is continuing and will end tomorrow at 6 pm.
Another report, however, said it has been called off.
ATSU launches six-day blockade over job quota:
Imphal, May 2: Supply of essential commodities was disrupted after the All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur, imposed a six-day economic blockade from today along Manipur’s two lifelines — the Imphal-Kohima highway and Imphal-Silchar highway.
The students imposed the blockade in support of their demand to increase quota to more than 30 per cent for tribal candidates for jobs in Manipur University. The university, which was upgraded to a central university two years back, has 7.5 per cent reservation for tribal candidates.
MUTSU decides to boycott MUSU:
Imphal, May 2: Accusing the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) of mistreating volunteers of the Manipur University Tribal Students' Union (MUTSU) during the general strike called by the latter on April 28 in MU campus, MUTSU has decided to boycott any function/programme indefinitely that may be organised by MUSU.
MUTSU president informed that it has also resolved not to participate in the forthcoming elections of MUSU and to extend cooperation and solidarity to the ATSUM in their course of action that may be launched in pursuit of various demands of the tribal people of Manipur.
UG demand from passenger bus decried:
Imphal, May 2: Decrying monetary demand of a UG group which has led to interruption of the passenger bus service between Takhel and Imphal, a large number of people mostly women staged a Wakat Meepham at Takhel Panthoibi Bazar appealing to the UG group to withdraw its demand and allow continuation of the service in the interest of the people.
Placards with slogans like 'Don't cause any more suffering to the people', 'Withdraw the demand in public interest', 'Bring an amicable solution between the two parties', 'Let the people be enlightened on the true goal of the UG groups', etc were used during the protest demonstration jointly organised by Takhel Apunba Meira Paibi, Tusemphai Meira Paibi and Kangluchingjin Khunou Meira Paibi bodies.
Sit-in-protest staged by State Education (U):
Imphal, May 2: UG's 'unbearable' demands forced the State Education (U) Dept. employees to stage a sit in protest on Friday at the Dept's premises at Keishampat here.
The employees union chairman and additional director of the Dept RK Chaoba said that UGs have been demanding contracts, budget, percentage to any developmental works, etc. taken up by the Dept.
He said that the intervention of the UGs has been causing immense hardships.
So the employees have decided to lock up the Dept office for a week starting from Saturday as part of the protest agitation.
KCP summons Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bishnupur:
Imphal, May 2: The underground KCP(MC) has directed Mrs. Tara Devi, chief judicial magistrate, Bishenpur, to surrender before it within five days or else face the organisation`s death sentence.
Giving reasons it said the lady had connived with the 7th Assam Rifles to have one of its cadres Md. Zimi alias Keny, of Lilong Ushoipokpi, arrested. The latter subsequently shot dead Zimi after it was established that he was a cadre of the KCP(MC).
Two AR men killed, four others hurt in ambush:
Imphal, May 2: The proscribed UNLF attacked troops of the Assam Rifles at two places in New Somtal area of Chandel district on Thursday in which at least two personnel were killed while four others were hurt in one of the attacks at a spot located between Phairengkot and Hrengkot village.
The UNLF has owned up both the attacks carried out by its 293 battalion MPA.
PULF denies link with ISI, disowns arrested men:
Imphal, May 2: The underground PULF denied all the charges made in a section of the press recently on the occasion of the arrest of MI Khan and some of his accomplices from outside the state.
In particular the release denied that the PULF keeps links with the ISI or the Harkat-Ul-Jihad-el-Islami (HUJI).

Imphal, May 2: With call for ensuring the rights of the labourers and daily wage earners and framing a policy for them, May Day was observed as in other part parts of the globe by various social organisations all over the State on Thursday.
To mark the occasion, All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers and Pullers' Welfare Association took out a rickshaw rally covering all the important places of Imphal East and Imphal West districts raising the demands for allowing the rickshaw drivers /pullers to work in peace, to stop harassing them and looking at them with suspicion and framing of a policy for the labourers and daily wage earners to ensure their rights.

New Delhi, May 2: A special exposition of the entire Indian Panorama films of the International Film Festival of India 2007 is being presented from today at Siri Fort Auditoria, New Delhi for the film buffs of the national capital.
The eight-day exposition titled 'The Festival of Indian Panorama 2007', which is organized by the directorate of film festivals, under the ministry of information and broadcasting will screen 21 feature and 15 non-feature films.

Imphal, May 2: The Sekmai police arrested a 27-year old youth identified as Thounaojam Sunil Singh, son of Th Leishang of Lamdeng Mayai Leikai on the charge raping a 17-year old girl from Lairen Shajik on April 27 evening in a house at Lamdeng under Lamshang police station.
KCP to forgo SK oil quota:
Imphal, May 2: After the PREPAK, the proscribed KCP has also declared to stop taking 'its quota' of kerosene oil.
A press release issued by the outfit's information and publicity secretary H Poirei supplementing the findings of the KYKL and UNLF on the scarcity of kerosene and high price stated that the scarcity of kerosene and its high price is due to selling kerosene oil in bulk by authorised dealers and sub-dealers before it reaches the hands of the common people.
The same practice has been going on before UG groups took their share of SK oil as well as after UG groups started taking their share.

Imphal, May 2: Chief Secretary Jarnail Singh inaugurated the tennis court of Kangpokpi Lawn Tennis Club at Kangpokpi on Thursday in of Saitu AC MLA Haokholet Kipgen, SP (Senapati), ADC (Kangpokpi) and functionaries of Manipur Tennis Association.
The tennis court is the first hard court surface in any district of Manipur, beyond Imphal.
The Chief Secretary also visited the proposed site for construction of two deco-turf tennis courts near the Mini Secretariat Complex at Kangpokpi.

Imphal, May 2: In yet another incident of crime against children, a 6-year old girl was found done to death brutally after her gold earring and silver neck chain were snatched.
The incident took place last night near the Imphal river bank at Telipati in Imphal West district.
Rice scam: Officials suspended
Imphal, May 2: Along with suspending the Inspector and other dealing assistants who were involved in siphoning off the rice quota meant for distribution among the poor of people of Senapati and Saikul Sub-division in November last year, the officials concerned have been asked to frame charge-sheets against them, FCS Minister Y Erabot has informed.
Talking to mediapersons after inspecting a site at Noney for setting up of an FCS godown having capacity of storing 1000 matric tonne of rice, the Minister said the inquiry report of the rice scam has been already submitted to the Government and necessary instruction for suspension of the officials concerned have been issued.
Manipur gets Rs. 44.52 cr for environment development:
New Delhi, May 2: The ministry of environment and forest made the budgetary provisions for north east states to the tune of Rs. 4647 crore during the last three years. The year wise allocations were Rs. 1388.19 crore, Rs. 1520.14 crore and Rs. 1539.00 crore for the years 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively.
