Alcohol Atlas of India

NE people consume more alcohol, tobacco:

New Delhi: After entering the record books for highest consumption of tobacco in the country, the North-East has had people addicted to high consumption of liquor, now.

According to the "Alcohol Atlas of India," consumption of alcohol in northeastern states is higher than many other parts of the country. Interestingly, women in the region drink more than their male counterparts.

The "Alcohol Atlas of India," prepared by Indian Alcohol Policy Alliance (IAPA), was recently released by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Anbumani Ramadoss. The overall patterns of alcohol consumption vary throughout the country, the Atlas said.

Besides the North-East including Sikkim, women also tend to drink more in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Goa are others states which have recorded high alcohol consumption in the country.

Earlier reports had said that the North-East suffered from high incidence of cancer, which was more than the national average, mainly due to the smoking habit among people of the region. Students and teachers of the region consume more tobacco than people in any other part of the country.

More than half of the teachers and clerks of schools in Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura were found to be using tobacco products.

The Atlas also said there had been a steady increase in production of alcohol in the country and it was expected to treble to 2300 million litres in 2008.

Releasing the Atlas, Dr Ramadoss said the number of alcohol users in India was on the rise and that alcohol addiction had no longer remained an urban phenomenon but it had also widely affected rural areas of the country.

For the northeastern states, the Union Health Ministry provides an annual recurring grant of Rs 2 lakh to each Drug De-addiction Centers. Presently, there are approximately 125 centers in the country out of which more than 40 are in the northeastern states, he said.

The Ministry of Social Justice also provides grants to non-governmental organisations for providing counselling and treatment facilities.
