Occupancy Day Observed

MLAs decry culture of violence:

Imphal, Apr 27: Highlighting suffering of the masses owing to increasing trend of gun culture and related violence perpetrated by both security forces and banned armed outfits marked the second Occupancy Day observance held today at GM Hall here under the aegis of Occupancy Day Observation Committee.

The Day is informed to be observed in grief of the then British colonial forces crushing the erstwhile independent Manipur on this day in 1891 .

speaking as the chief guest Naoriya Pakhanglakpa AC's MLA RK Anand decried that violent activities that had been besieging the State has exceeded level of tolerance in every aspect and observed that in case such trend persists future of Manipuri society is very bleak.

Equally condemning wanton killings by activists of banned armed outfits as well as extra judicial elimination by trigger happy security force personnel, the legislator called for sanity and reliance upon existing legal provisions in sorting out all outstanding dispute rather than exterminating any unwanted elements through the barrel of guns.

Pointing to growing instances of public dissidence and instant reaction by the people against all forms of violence, he affirmed that such development is a clear indication of the masses' unwillingness to remain as mute spectators.

Categorically asserting that ongoing culture of violence has no place in the society, the MLA also cautioned that apart from insecure feeling of the people the State's economy stands to deplete further if the trend is not curbed at the opportune moment apart from gradually leading to decadence in social fabric of the indigenous people and its age-old culture and tradition.

MLAs Th Lokeshore and Thangkholun Haokip, and advisor of the programme hosts L Mangisana also attended the observance as the guests of honour.

As resource persons of the observation programme, Dr M Kriti elucidated on 'Kangla War in Manipur 1891 with Rose Mangshi Haokip deliberating on 'Kuki War in Manipur'.

Another highlight of the observance was handing over of monetary assistance to six young widows which was provided by MLA Thangkholun and L Mangisana.

a stage play entitled 'Chanu Rose Sadum Phakkhrabee Nupi Amagee Tentha' was also presented by artistes of Achiba Theatre on the occasion.
