Three more doctors, one supplier nailed:
Imphal, Jan 31: Three more doctors and one supplier have been nailed by the Court in two special trial cases in connection with the 1981 medical scam under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act.
Case dossiers said that the convicted persons swindled over Rs 20 lakh while purchasing medical equipments by quoting exorbitant rates.
The doctors convicted are identified as Dr G Mani Sharma, currently serving as Superintendent of the State's Tuberculosis Hospital, Dr T Vijoychandra Singh, Dr Pukhrambam Brajamani Singh and supplier Ashok Kumar Jain.
The three doctors were convicted in two cases-Special Trial No I and Special III, while the Court convicted Ashok Kumar Jain in Special Trial No III, said Advocate P Ibomcha Singh, Special Public Prosecutor while appearing on behalf of the Government.
Ibomcha said that the case was registered with the Jiribam Police station in 1982 as it fell within Jiribam sub-division of Imphal East.
The three doctors were convicted by the Court of Special Judge No I (Manipur West) headed by Th Surbala Devi on Thursday.
The same Court had also passed the same verdict against the three and Ashok Kumar, added Ibomcha.
The three doctors were found guilty of procuring medical equipments to the tune of Rs 7.2 lakhs at exorbitant rates, contended the State Counsel.
Detailing, the Counsel said that using forged letter heads, they purchased 40 Baby Weighing Machines at the rate of Rs 7500 per piece while the actual price was only Rs 240 apiece.
They again bought 3000 Nasal Feeding tubes (for adults) at Rs 140 per piece while the market rate then was only Rs 2.50.A number of other charges were levelled against the accused and the Court deemed it fit to pass its judgement on the basis of the material produced.
The other charges included buying equipments at blown up prices such as Rubber Catheter, surgical gloves etc.
Many doctors have been nailed earlier.
