Bamboo Flowering

Chandel district affected:

Like in two hill districts of Manipur, Churachandpur and Tamenglong district, bamboo flowering has occurred in some parts of Chandel district.

There are reports of bamboo flowering in Chandel district at Moreh, Tengnoupal and Lokchao areas but gregarious flowering of bamboo did not happen except bamboo flowering in small groups and small areas, said a Chandel newsletter.

No spectacular damage to human life and its economy was encountered, the report added.

Chandel district has a geographical area of 3313 square kilometers with bamboo brakes covering 212.39 square kilometers. The area is out of total 1591.93 square kilometers area covered by bamboo brakes in the state.

Most of the bamboo growing areas are concentrated in Tengnoupal and Moreh sub-division and maximum flowering occurred during the year 2006-07. Maximum flowering has been detected in Moubi wa (Melocana baccifera) species.

Bamboo flowering is a threat to human life, its economy and the environment because of the increased population of rats and mice resulting from feeding on bamboo seeds.

Mention may be made that since mass bamboo flowering occurred in two eastern districts of Churachandpur and Tamenglong district in Manipur, the state government has been implementing various programmes to overcome the rodent menace mostly under sponsorship by the Central government.

No spectacular damage to human life and economy was encountered in the district by the bamboo flowering. However, there was loss of bamboos because of the flowering. Once the bamboo flowers it dies normally, the report of the district information officer said.

The achievement report of the district veterinary office of the district also mentioned that under the rehabilitation programme taken up by the veterinary office 40 families affected by the bamboo flowering were given rehabilitation by providing four improved varieties of pigs along with 12 bags of pig feed to each family.

A one-day publicity cum awareness programme on bamboo flowering and rodent control was also conducted by the divisional forest officer, Tengnoupal forest division, Chandel on January 7 this year at Darchin village where villagers from 14 nearby bamboo flowering zone villages participated.

Another report in the newsletter of Chandel district on the activities of the social welfare department said that a total of 1689 aged old people are getting benefits under the Centrally sponsored national old age pension scheme in Chandel district while another 944 are beneficiaries of the Manipur old age pension sponsored by the state government.

Under the national old age pension scheme, mention may be made, old age pension is awarded to the destitute aged persons living below poverty line, BPL families who have attained the age of 65 years and above.

The pension amount which was earlier Rs. 75 per month per beneficiary has been increased to Rs. 200 effective from 2006-07.

Out of the 1689 beneficiaries of the district, 447 are from the Chandel block, 370 are from Chakpikarong block, 165 from Khengjoy block, 399 from Moreh block and 308 are from Machi block, the report said.

Pensions have been distributed to the beneficiaries upto the month of June 2007 but funds for the period from January to March of the year 2007 have not been released, the report added.

The article also said that another 944 old persons are benefiting from the Manipur old age pension scheme. Out of the beneficiaries under the scheme 626 are from the Tengnoupal Assembly constituency and 318 are from the Chandel Assembly constituency.

Under the scheme, beneficiaries are getting Rs. 100 per month.
