National Bamboo Mission
AJFMC alleges disparity in fund allotment:
Imphal, Jan 31: The All Joint Forest Management Committee (AJFMC), Tamenglong district, has alleged the existence of imbalance in the allotment of funds under the Central Government's National Bamboo Mission (NBM) in the hill districts of Manipur and urged the concerned Department to take up remedial measures.
The AJFMC has alleged that under the NBM, which is implemented through the State Forest Department agency (FDA), there is disparity in the allotment of schemes hectare wise.
It pointed out that, out of the total 4000 hectares targeted in the whole State, only 500 hectares have been allotted to the western Tamenglong division though it is considered as the only 'bamboo district' among all hill districts of the State.
Out of the 4000 hectares targeted area, 600 hectares have been allotted to the eastern Ukhrul Forest division where no traces of bamboo are seen, it alleged.
As per the FDA allotment, the northern Kangpokpi division is allocated 600 hectares, 570 hectares to Senapati Forest division, 660 hectares to southern Churachandpur Forest division, 500 hectares to Jiribam Forest division, and another 570 hectares to Tengnoupal Forest division.
Feeling being sidelined in the allocation of areas under the scheme, Jangamlung Panmei, an ex-MLA of Tamenglong said that the concerned authorities have been neglecting Tamenglong district.
The authorities are ostensibly ignoring the district in the implementation of the scheme to rejuvenate bamboo plantation, which are now withering, he alleged.
He also said that if the Government neglects the area, the State will have to suffer for around 6-7 years.
Even if Tamenglong produce larger quantity of bamboo, the ex-MLA has expressed his appreciation on setting up Chipping Plant at Jiri, considering the accessibility of the area.
The AJFMC had also submitted a memorandum to the DFO of Tamenglong district and the State Minister of Forest and Environment complaining the disparity in the allotment of funds and drawing their attentions on the need to allot 80 per cent of the total fund to the district.
