Anti-Leprosy Day observed:
As in other parts of the country, Anti-Leprosy Day was observed on Wednesday to coincide with the martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhiji in remembrance of the works done by him during his lifetime for the welfare of Leprosy patients at the hall of Leprosy Control Unit of Thoubal District Leprosy Society.
Along with offering floral tributes to the photograph of Gandhiji, a one minute silence was observed.
The main objective of the observance was to spread awareness among the people and encourage them to join hands in eradicating leprosy disease.
Four persons who have been cured from the scourge of Leprosy were also felicitated with gifts at the occasion.
The All Manipur Medical Department Leprosy Employees Association, AMMDLEA observed the "Anti Leprosy Day 2008 at the Leprosy Hospital, Lei-Ingkhol today at 10.30 am.
The observation was marked by the distribution of gifts like blanket, fruits, etc. to the leprosy patients.
As part of Anti-Leprosy week `08 observations, similar functions will also be held at Leprosy Hospital, Bishnupur and Thoubal on February 1 and February 4 respectively.
There are 10 patients presently at the Leprosy Hospital, Lei-ingkhol, out of whom all but one are female.
Kakhulong gas leak fire razes three buildings:
At least three residential houses were reduced to ashes in a devastating fire that broke out in the Kakhulong enclave at Paona Bazar in the heart of Imphal city on Wednesday morning.
The fire, which apparently started from a leaking gas cylinder, resulted in the loss of property worth some Rs 6 lakhs, according to locals.
The fire broke out at the home of one Meitutna Phaomei at around 11:45 am and quickly spread to nearby houses. Two houses, belonging to Mangijao Gangmei and Athoiliu were entirely engulfed, devastating the upper floor of each house.
The fire also spread to the house of Thambalngou Kamson and destroyed some property.
Fire tenders, who had a hard time reaching the spot because of road excavation for the sewerage project, managed to bring the fire under control before it spread further.

College strike:
Oriental College Students' Union has warned to intensify the ongoing agitation if the Govt. does not take up positive action soon.
The Union has been boycotting regular classes since Jan 21 against transfer of 5 teachers.
Recruitment rally:
As announced earlier, army recruitment rallies will be held on Feb 4, 16 and 19 at Karimganj (Tripura), Tinsukia and Missamari in Assam respectively for the youth of all the NE States who are between the age group of 17 and 23, said PIB (DW) in a statement on Wednesday.
Desirous candidates can go to any of the said places to take part in the rally.
Candidates should have qualified in SSC in Science with a minimum aggregate of 50 pc and they should have scored at least 40 pc in each subject and must in possession of their original certificates.
Tamenglong bandh:
The owners of public transport vehicles of Tamenglong and the traders association have called a 12-hr bandh on the National Highway-53 from Wednesday midnight.
The bandh has been called to facilitate a successful memorial stone erection at the Naga Army headquarter of NP battalion of the NSCN(IM) at Buning under Tamei sub-division.
Thousands of people from Assam, Manipur and Nagaland will be gathering at the venue tomorrow. The chief guest of the function will be Gen (Retd) VS Atem while the guest of honour will be AK Lungalam.
General strike:
The joint action committee of the candidates wait-listed during the recruitment process for the 5th and 6th IRB battalions have called a 24-hour general strike on February 1 in protest against the government`s refusal to entertain their demand for their appointment in the IRB units.
A statement issued in this regard by the JAC said the general strike, lasting from 5 am of February 1 to 5 am of the next day, has been called as the deadline of January 30 set by the JAC has expired without the government taking any action concerning their demands.
The statement further said religious ceremonies, and essential services, including water supply, electricity, fire services and the media will be exempt from the purview of the strike.
Candidates' appeal:
Alleging that they have been denied opportunity to attend physical efficiency test for recruitment of SIs, Jemadars and ASIs even as it was informed through media that physical test for candidates belonging to Thoubal district who could not attend the same on the scheduled dates earlier would be held on January 28 and 29 at Manipur Police Training School, Pangei, the left out candidates have appealed to the authority concerned to enable attend physical test.
Even as physical test was conducted for 17 candidates on January 28, no PET was conducted for other candidates on the day or on the next day (January 29).
Moreover, despite their appeals, the left out candidates were not allowed to attend physical test today too, conveyed a release on Wednesday.
CRPF man dies:
A CRPF personnel belonging to the 48th Battalion reportedly committed suicide on Tuesday evening at the unit's Keimai post located under Nungba police station of Tamenglong district.
Constable Awadesh Kumar (29) of Madhya pradesh took the extreme action after his leave petition was allegedly spurned by his senior officials.
Nungba police have registered a case on the matter and the body claimed by CRPF authorities on completion of post mortem at RIMS morgue.
Seri project contractors threaten stir:
Irked with the failure of the Government to pay bills and provide indent in time for contractors engaged in constructing Individual Adult Rearing House (IARH) of the Manipur Sericulture Project, the District Council Sericulture Contractors' and Sub-Contractors' Association has threatened to launch democratic forms of agitation from February 10 .
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club at Imphal on Wednesday, secretary of the contractors' association M Bijoy Meitei informed that contractors and sub-contractors of the association were entrusted to construct 4000 IARH in all the nine districts of the State.
Subsequently, the contractors took up the construction since 2004.
Even as all the 4000 IARH were scheduled to complete by the current year, only 2700 IARH have been constructed so far.
Of the total liability of Rs 12.15 crores for construction of these 2700 IARH, only 25 per cent ( Rs 3.37 crores) has been released till date, Bijoy conveyed.

The woeful condition of the Imphal-Saikul road is set for a sea change as Rs 2.50 crore has been released for repairing/black topping of the said route.
Disclosing the development while speaking at the inauguration function of the newly constructed Kuki Inn in his Saikul constituency on Wednesday, MLA Doukhomang Khongsai said that maintenance work had already begun.
he expressed satisfaction that his promise to the people of Saikul during election rallies to prioritise development of the Imphal-Saikul road is now on the verge of complete fulfilment.
Out of the total amount of Rs 2.5 crore earmarked for the road link, Rs 1.5 crore would be utilised for developing the Khundrakpam-Purum Liklikhong stretch and the remaining reserved for Purum upto Saikul, detailed the Saikul AC legislator.
