Stir against UG Demand

Local bodies to shut office for five days:

Imphal, Apr 22: The ongoing agitation by the members of Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats is all set for further intensification as the Councillors have decided to resort to a five day office closure and pen down strike which also won the backing of Councillors of Imphal Municipal Council.

An emergency meeting of the Councillors of Imphal Municipal Council held today at the office chamber of the Chairperson unanimously resolved to join the ongoing sit-in-protest/pen-down strike being observed under the banner of JAC All Manipur Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat, informed a release.

The peeved Councillors have already threatened to tender an en-masse resignation if the rebels do not honour their appeal and withdraw threats within the five day office closure period.

The strong steps have been taken up even as chief minister O Ibobi Singh reportedly assured the agitators of providing adequate security protection.

JAC secretary O Bimola Devi said the council's representatives highlighted their problems to the CM during a meeting held this morning.

They confided to the Chief Minister regarding remote possibility of able to meet demand of the rebel groups.

According to the secretary the rebels kept the Municipal Council office of Nambol (Bishnupur district) under lock and key till their demand is not coughed up.

The threats came amid the councillors demanding the state government to give devolution of powers to them.

Unable to bear the pressure or comply to the banned outfits' illegal insistence members of numerous local bodies had been on sit-in-protests at different locations of Imphal west, Imphal east, Bishnupur and Thoubal district.

It may be noted that on April 20, JAC representatives had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister urging him to take up necessary action before they resort to intense agitation.

Meanwhile, one local women vigil groupOinam Meira Paibi Luphas appealed to all the rebel groups to withdraw their monetary demand on the local bodies and bring about an amicable solution to the problems being faced by the councillors at the earliest possible in the interest of the general public.

To protest the monetary demand from UGs and the related incident of firing attacks at the residences of its officials and staff, employees of the Manipur Tribal Development Co-operation (MTDC) today staged a Wakat Meepham inside the complex of the Co-operation located at Lamphelpat.

The protest demonstration was staged from 10 am to 4 pm.

During the demonstration, the employees used placards and festoons inscribed with slogans like 'We want peace', 'Help in survival of the Co-operation', 'Don't impose unbearable monetary demand', 'Don't create fear psychosis among the officials and staff of the Co-operation and allow them to discharge their duties without any fear'.
