Loktak Lake Dying

Needs urgent attention, say visiting ambassadors:

Imphal: Loktak Lake is the only fresh water lake surviving in India, but the present condition of the lake is quite unhealthy. The state government and the people of Manipur should take up measures to preserve and develop it. This was the opinion of three ambassadors from the countries of Finland, Sweden and Denmark who are on a visit to the state.

Lars-Olof Lindgren, the ambassador of Sweden, Asko Numminen, the ambassador of Finland and Ole Lonsmann Poulsen, the ambassador of Denmark expressed that they had come on a visit of India since a few months back but their real objective was to visit the north eastern part of the country. Therefore, they approached the Indian embassy for a visit to the north eastern areas and had so far visited Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.

The ambassadors said that the people of Manipur were excellent in hospitality and they really appreciated the rich cultural heritage of Manipur and really respected it.

Showing deep concern for the Loktak Lake they expressed that the beauty of the lake seemed to be fading. Though it was their first visit of the state they could see that the lake was sick and needed to be maintained properly if we were not to lose the only fresh water lake in India. They also discussed the matter with the state government who in turn informed them that they were doing their best to protect it.

Asko Numminen noted that the three states of the north east part of India which they visited were quite challenging since the people were living in a conflict zone. People now seemed to be used to it and perhaps they were more intelligent and maintained the society well under such conditions, he said.

The ambassadors also said that they were not here for any assistance programme or something related to it. They had come on a visit as they had heard quite a lot about the situation in the north eastern part of India. They were here to learn about the conditions and to know how people were living in the conflict zone. However, they were a bit disappointed since they were not allowed to go to some places which are restricted. However, it had benefited them to some extent, they felt.
