Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya silver jubilee:

The silver jubilee of the DM Dev Sarma Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya was celebrated on Sunday at Hotel Imphal under the aegis of Manipur Sanskrit Parishad.

The event was graced by L Jayantakumar, president of Manipur Sanskrit Parishad RK Jhaljit and noted poet Laishram Somorendro as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Jhaljit said the Sanskrit Parishad shall soon produce a Sanskrit-Manipuri-English dictionary. A symposium on legendary poet Kalidas was also held.

During the symposium moderated by principal of DM Dev Sarma Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya L Narayan, G Tombi spoke on 'Life and Time of Kalidas', RK Jhaljit on 'Raghuvansa'.

Journal 'Heritage' released:

The first edition of the journal 'Heritage' to be published in Manipuri bi-annually by Cultural and Historical Research Trust was released during a function at Manipur Press Club at Imphal on Sunday.

Another book titled 'Meitrabakki Yotthangi Chak written by Bramhacharimayum Kullachandra Sharma and published by Wareppam Jibanlata Devi was also released at the occasion.

The function was attended by noted Archeologist Okram Kumar Singh and noted writer Sairem Nilbir as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.

The president of Cultural and Historical Research Trust Bramhacharimayum Kullachandra Sharma presided over the function.

UCM joins Indrajit release chorus:

The United Committee Manipur (UCM), taking serious note of ever increasing violent incidents in the state has appealed to organisations involved in the abduction of Salam Indrajit to honour the masses' appeal for releasing the individual.

Salam Indrajit, who is a Section Officer in the Engineering Cell of State's Education Department, was reportedly abducted on December 15 and his whereabouts remain unknown till date.

A UCM statement issued by its assistant secretary IPR also highlighted anxiety and uncertain caused to the public owing to factional clashes among armed outfits, taking hostage of innocent civilians to settle score between rival groups, exploding bombs at public places and at private residences.

The UCM also turned its ire against security forces for failing to safeguard life and property of the citizens as well as taking undue advantage of existing laws under the pretext of containing insurgency movements.

The ongoing army operation in pockets of Chandel district also came under the UCM scanner with the body alleging that skirmishes between the security forces and armed cadres at Samtal area have led to mass displacement of the villagers which the Government has been ironically and disturbing remaining inactive to extend solace to the suffering public.

MLA boycotted:

Peeved with the insensitivity of the local MLA Irengbam Hemochandra to the issue pertaining to the abduction of CRYDA (Chinga Mathak College Road Youths' Development Assn) president Salam Indrajit since December 15, the local club has decided to boycott the MLA together with his family.

CRYDA lamented that even as the family of Indrajit has been enduring great pangs of pain for the last 15 days, there has been no word of consolation or concern from the MLA.

It also decried the inaction and silence of other elected legislators.

Scribes decry:

The All Jiribam Working Journalists' Union has condemned the thrashing of its president N Priyobarta by a person identified as M Dilip of Babupara, Jiri and his associates at around 7.40 pm on Saturday.

According to the victim, the accused along with his associates started thrashing him without giving any reason while he was waiting for someone at Block colony, Jiri, on Saturday.

An FIR has been lodged with Jiri Police Station in connection with the incident.

KRA (U) counters allegations:

Refuting all the charges levelled against the outfit by publicity secretary of KRA Th Misao alias Jonathan as baseless and unfounded, information and publicity secretary of KRA (U) Lenin Ch has stated that KRA (U) has no connection with the murder of K Hangsing nor it has nothing to gain from it.

All that KRA (U) wants is to rectify the mindset of the KRA leaders who are bereft of any party principle and think of nothing but extortion, Lenin said in a statement.

Countering that KRA has been misleading both the brethren of the hills and the valley by offering 30 percent of the extortion amount and its leaders are misusing the party fund for construction of their private houses and purchasing other private properties, Lenin questioned the ideology of KRA.

Waree Leeba presentation:

The indigenous narrative art form of Waree Leeba will be presented at Indira Gandhi Centre for Art, Delhi, on January 3 and 4 by Mayanglambam Sadananda.

Sadananda is an active member of the All Manipur Waree Leeba Association and Research Centre, Imphal.

Environment meet:

Mohd A Visban Hanif of Yairpok Changamdabi and Marshal Leiphrakpam of Ahallup Awang Leikai have been selected to attend the National Conference of Young Environmentalist scheduled to be held at Jamnagar, Gujarat from January 9 to 13, informed Director of Social Welfare Department.

Nupi Lan celebration winds up:

The month-long observation of Nupi Lan under the aegis of Nupi Lan Memorial Association, Manipur to commemorate the historic women's war waged against the British rulers in 1939 would come to an end on Monday with a public gathering at Nupi Lan Memorial Complex.

Besides others, floral tribute to those fearless mothers would be the main programme of the closing ceremony.

UG cadres held:

Two cadres of the NSCN (IM) identified as Gain Raikhan (32) of Mapao Khullen and RV Sonzimik (40) of Khongbal Tangkhul were arrested by Imphal East commandos during a frisking exercise at Lamlong Bazar at about 5.15 am on Saturday, informed SP Imphal East L Kailun.
