Bullet in beer smuggler's leg:

Imphal, Dec 29: As a follow up action to setting ablaze a truck laden with smuggled can-beer at Thoubal on December 25, the owner of the truck, who surrendered to the proscribed outfit RPF, was paraded before mediapersons somewhere in Senapati district on Saturday before punishing him with a bullet on his left calf.

Along with having found out that the can-beer were smuggled in from Myanmar, the details of the cash amount and other gifts allegedly given to police personnel and AR posts for giving safe passage to the smuggled goods have come to light.

Parading the truck owner identified as Thounaojam Inao alias Dhananjoy (35) s/o Thounaojam Budhi of Khongjom Papal, a spokesperson of department of communication and publicity of the proscribed outfit informed that Inao would be shot on his leg as punishment for defying the prohibition on foreign liquor and drug trafficking imposed by RPF with the support of the people since 1990.

Inao was found with a bullet pumped on his left calf at Hiyangkhong at around 7.15 pm on Saturday.

The spokesperson said as per the statement furnished by Inao, the can-beer consignment costing around Rs 4.25 lakhs had been brought in from Myanmar along with one Nepali woman identified as Sunita of Tamu on December 23.

One woman identified as Chongpi had been given the responsibility of bringing the consignment from Moreh to Pallel.

On the way for giving safe passage, Tengnoupal police had taken Rs 8000, one blanket among other goods as 'gifts' by Assam Rifles personnel posted at Bongyang and Rs 7000 by Pallel police.

Over and above this, IRB personnel posted at Pallel had taken Rs 200 thinking that the truck was carrying only fire wood as the can-beer had been concealed under the fire wood, the spokesperson said quoting the statement furnished by Inao.

It was the responsibility of Inao to transport the can-beer consignment from Pallel to Mao, the spokesperson said, while observing that the smuggling ring in the form of partnership.

The total expenditure estimated by them to bring the consignment from Myanmar to Moreh was Rs 18,000, Rs 4,500 from Moreh to Khudengthabi and Rs 30,000 from Khudengthabi to Kohima, the spokesperson said, adding that one Mangboi of Khudengthabi has contributed a sum of Rs 50,000 for the whole operation.

Talking to mediapersons, the accused Inao said that they had bought the can beer from Myanmar for Rs 4.25 lakhs and was expecting to fetch above Rs 9 lakhs while selling the same at Kohima.
