CM lauds role of media:

Imphal, Jan 7: On the 33rd foundation day of the Manipur Press Club, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has assured a medical treatment and rehabilitation scheme for the journalists of the state, while lauding the role of the media in running a democracy.

The Manipur Press Club, one of the oldest bodies of journalists in the north east completed 33 years on Sunday. The scribes celebrated the day at its office premises in the city with Ibobi Singh as chief guest.

The chief minister said, "A government can not run without the media, which everybody know is the fourth pillar of democracy. My government wants to help the media to the maximum."

While speaking of the efforts taken up by the government towards the welfare of the journalist fraternity, Singh assured that the government will increase grant-in-aid to the journalists pension scheme.

He also instructed the state directorate of publicity and information to put up a proposal to enhance the press club maintenance amount from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs 1.50 lakh before the sectoral allotments for the next financial year is done.

He also asked the officials of the All Manipur Working Journalists` Union to make a suggestion to the government on the scheme for medical treatment and rehabilitation for the working journalists so that the government could speed up the implementation of the same.

He also wanted the journalists to provide information of any such schemes in other states of the country so that state government could implement similar schemes.

Speaking on the role played by the media in governance, Ibobi Singh said without the media, it will not be possible to run a government successfully.

He also urged the media to write in a constructive manner by pointing out wrongs in government policy.

State information minister, TN Haokip who attended the function as guest of honour said that even though Manipur was the first state in the north east to have a body for the journalists, "publication need to be improved as the same is lagging behind comparing to the standard of the other states of the region."

However, he expressed pride that there are no "yellow journalists" in the state.

Noting the countless problems faced by the journalists in the state, he said "today the journalists are facing more difficulties than politicians in our trouble ridden state."
